🐝 Wasp nest in Bridgnorth today.

The customer had noticed new damp marks appearing on the ceiling that hadn't been there before. It turned out the wasps had built a nest above the ceiling, and the nest was making the plasterboard damp from behind.

The first video shows the staining on the ceiling, and the second shows the nest using a thermal camera. It's a useful way of confirming where the nest is without causing any unnecessary damage.

If you notice new damp patches or marks appearing on a ceiling for no obvious reason, don't ignore them. Although there can be many different causes, a hidden wasp nest is one possibility, especially at this time of year.

🐜 Ant treatment carried out in Bridgnorth today.

This video shows worker ants feeding on Advion Ant Gel inside an ant bait station before the lid was fitted. They carry the gel back to the nest, where it's shared with the rest of the colony, which is why it's important not to disturb them straight after treatment.

Just a quick correction to something I say in the video: I mention that the queen lays infertile eggs after feeding on the treatment. That's actually a different ant treatment, not Advion Ant Gel. Advion works by being carried back and shared throughout the colony.

I left the video as it was because I thought it was better to correct the mistake here than pretend I hadn't made it.

🐝 A good comparison of just how big wasp nests can get.

The huge nest filling the apex of the loft is last year's nest, which is now inactive. Attached to it is this year's live nest, already about the size of a football.

It really shows how quickly a small starter nest can develop into something much bigger over the course of the season. At the moment, many nests are still relatively small, but by late summer they can contain thousands of wasps.

If you're seeing wasps regularly flying to the same spot around your home, it's worth getting it checked sooner rather than later. Early nests are much easier to deal with than fully established ones.

🐝 A median wasp nest removed in Bridgnorth today.

This one was built in a fruit hedge and was still in the early stages, making it a good candidate for removal using an ice spray. The spray freezes the wasps and nest instantly, so there's no need for insecticide in situations like this.

Median wasps often choose hedges, shrubs and bushes as nesting sites rather than lofts or wall cavities such as Common wasps. They also finish their colonies earlier in the season.

If you're noticing wasps regularly flying to and from the same spot in your garden, it's worth getting it checked before the nest has chance to grow.

🐝 Wasp nest treated today.

At first glance, it looked as though there were only a couple of wasps using the nest. Once I started the treatment though, plenty more appeared! It just goes to show that what you can see on the outside isn't always the full story.

This is quite common with early nests. A lot of the wasps are inside the nest or away foraging, so the activity can look much quieter than it really is.

The video shows what happened once the treatment was applied.

If you're noticing wasps regularly flying to the same spot around your home or shed, it's worth getting it checked before the nest gets much bigger.

🐝 Starter hornet nest removed from a shed today.

This was still in the early stages, and you can clearly see the eggs inside the cells of the nest. At this point, the queen is doing all the work herself – building the nest, laying eggs and soon would be feeding the developing larvae once those eggs hatch.

Hornets tend to get started a little later than common wasps, which are already well underway now. Over the coming weeks, these small starter nests can grow surprisingly quickly once the first workers emerge.

An interesting find and a good example of why it's worth checking sheds, garages and outbuildings at this time of year.
