Let’s talk mental health and how it can affect our home environments! 🏠💭
I have a deep understanding, training, and experience around mental health conditions/neurodiversity — particularly OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), and ASD (Autism) — and how they can impact our ability to complete everyday tasks at home. When things become overwhelming, even simple chores can feel impossible.
OCD and ADHD are especially misunderstood when it comes to cleanliness and organisation. Many assume that people with these conditions must have perfectly tidy homes due to a need for order or high energy levels. In reality, this is often not the case — these conditions can actually create barriers… ADHD, OCD, and ASD can affect executive functioning, emotional regulation, and tolerance to environmental change — all of which can impact home organisation.
For example:
💫 ADHD can lead to starting multiple projects at once, struggling to finish them, and feeling mentally blocked or overwhelmed.
🧼 OCD can make tasks harder due to the need for things to be done exactly right or at the perfect time.
🧩 Autism (ASD) can bring challenges too — even positive changes, like tidying or reorganising, can cause distress or meltdowns, especially for children, due to changes in their environment.
It’s also important to remember that trauma and PTSD can sometimes mimic or overlap with symptoms of ADHD (supported by research in psychiatry and neuropsychology), which can lead to misdiagnosis.
So, when visiting someone’s home — what should be their safe space — please be mindful, kind, and non-judgmental. A home that looks “messy” to you might reflect someone’s current mental health challenges, not laziness.
