Some chimneys may not have been in use for the past couple weeks with the weather taking a nice turn on the run up to summer.
But some chimneys may not have been used for longer, in some cases, years!
An old birds nest (pictured below) that at some point fell down the chimney, had clogged up the flue pipe on this stove, leaving it unfit & unsafe to use.
With the baffle plate in place, the nest was not visible to the owner but luckily they contacted us first to check & sweep the chimney for peace of mind.
If they had lit a fire with this nest still in place, it could have come with some big problems such as:
- Smoke/fumes not escaping resulting in it blowing back into the room
- nest could potentially catch alight which can lead to a chimney fire
- damage to the chimney structure & stove
With it being the nesting season, our advice to our customers, new home owners, landlords and the general public is to:
- take notice of birds flying back and forth to your chimney
- finding small twigs that have fallen into your fireplace is a sign birds have begun nesting in your chimney
- lighting a small fire once a week as the smoke will deter birds from nesting in your chimney
- Annual sweeping to keep the chimney clear of nests, blockages and reduce soot & creosote build-up
