Bumble Bee Season!
Now it the time of year that we start to get phone calls for wasps nests but this invariably turns out to be bumble bees or masonry bees (check our page for a post regarding information about masonry bees a couple of weeks ago).
Bumble bees are friendly creatures and absolutely vital to us and the planet, yet many people are frightened of or misunderstand bees.
We have hundreds of calls every spring/summer from customers worried about bumble bees and requesting treatments but after a chat we find that most are happy to leave them to live their short lives.
They will generally be with us from around April/May through until July/August and can commonly be found in and around properties.
The most common query we receive each year is always bees up near the guttering on the corner of a property.
The nests will be set up close to the area where the activity is noted and the behaviour of the bees can look quite intimating as a large number of bees are often seen buzzing around the top corner frantically.
Although it can look scary this really is nothing to be concerned about. These are the males looking for females and it’s not unusual for this activity to carry on for a number of weeks before settling down.
Most local companies do not treat bees and will offer you advice rather than generating unnecessary work.
There are, as in any industry a number of less scrupulous companies who rather than take the time to discuss and explain will happily come out and kill bees.
These companies will usually charge a premium for the unnecessary treatment (one local company charging nearly £200.00 last year) as they play on fears.
If you suspect you have a bees nest or would like any advice please do give us a call and we will be happy to discuss your concerns.
VIVA LA BEES!!!!
