Over time grease, oil and dirt particles attach themselves to the surface of your leather and because they can pe*****te deep inside the actual grain of your leather it can cause it to loose its soft feel, even causing it to look faded, loose its colour and crack. It is for this reason that periodic cleaning and conditioning of your leather is essential if it is to keep its luxurious look, feel and smell.
CARING FOR YOUR LEATHER UPHOLSTERY.
It is important for our customers to understand leather. The initial purchase is made by how the leather looks and feels on the showroom floor, but without periodic cleaning the leather can look unsightly after only a short few years.
LEATHER : MAINTENANCE & PROPERTIES.
Over 90% of leather on the market today is finished (protected or pigmented), meaning it contains either a pigmented coating or a lacquered coating (or both), this coating totally covers the leather acting as a barrier between the leather and its surroundings. Removing imperfections in the leathers appearance in this way actually helps protect the leather and it is often the most durable and cleaner friendly.
The other 10% of leathers are unfinished which means these leathers have no coating applied to them. These are known as aniline, pull up and oily/waxy pull up leathers.
These unfinished leathers are generally expensive high end products but are very prone to staining and can often be destroyed by leather cleaning kits. Only professional leather cleaners should touch unfinished leather.
NUBUCK and SUEDE.
These leathers have had their surfaces buffed to create a nap making them stain very easily, and because the stain is absorbed extremely difficult if not impossible to clean.
WHAT TYPE OF LEATHER DO YOU HAVE?
The easiest way to tell what type of leather you have is to do a water absorption test. A bead of water is placed on the leather and if it is absorbed then you have an unprotected leather but if the bead of water sits on top then you have a protected leather.
How often do you need to clean your leather.
The major tanneries who produce the leather recommend your leather be cleaned every 12 months by a trained technician.
LEATHER CLEANING & CONDITIONING.
The removal of dirt, grime, grease and oil is accomplished using our specialist leather cleaning products. The cleaning solution is applied by sponge and worked into the grain with a specialist brush with the soiled particles being wiped away with a cloth.
A leather protection cream is then applied to the clean leather acting as a conditioner, re-instating the smell back into the leather while adding a protective barrier to the leather that repels stains and protects the surface from wear and tear.
