The government has officially scrapped Non-Crime Hate Incidents (NCHIs), putting an end to officers being pulled away from frontline duties to investigate legal social media posts and minor disputes.
Over recent years, unclear guidance failed to keep pace with the digital age, leading to police being called to people's homes over routine arguments and online insults. The new measures will prevent officers from recording lawful free speech, while ensuring genuine threats still get the right response.
For the security industry, this is a welcome shift. More officers focused on real crime and community safety means stronger public protection, something we're fully behind at RG8 Security.
Police will still be able to monitor serious community tensions and protect those who need it most. It's about getting the balance right between free speech and public safety.
