It's this time of year that wasp nests die, and the newly mated queens look for dry, sheltered spaces to hibernate.
Winter is a hazardous time for queen wasps. The crevices that they chose are often also homes to spiders looking for their next meal. If they survive predation and the cold of winter, it only takes a few unseasonally warm days at the beginning of spring and they could emerge too soon and find no food available, meaning they die of hunger.
Please be kind to hibernating wasps - we'll need their help through the spring and summer months!

Pest control isn’t always about using rodenticide and insecticides. Today I have arranged for the safe relocation of a swarm of honey bees from a school.

You will probably be alerted to the existence of fleas as your pet may constantly scratch itself, or you may develop skin irritations or reactions to bites. The existence of fleas can be confirmed by the identification of flea droppings, which are small and black in colour. These normally contain dried blood, and are often found in clusters next to the skin.
If you do have a pet, they are easily spotted in light haired animals by brushing back the hair. However, in dark coated animals it may be better to comb the animal over a sheet of paper onto which the flea droppings will then fall. To identify whether these black objects are in fact flea dropping, simply add a few drops of water to them. If they are flea droppings, they will turn red.

How can wasps help humans?

There are other reasons to admire wasps. For one thing, they may be indirectly responsible for the invention of paper. Around 2,000 years ago a Chinese eu**ch called Cai Lun noticed a wasp building a paper nest in his garden. Inspired by what he saw, he started to mulch wood and with it made the first paper. If the story is true, then perhaps we have wasps to thank for much of our rich cultural history and development.

Fast forward to today where exciting research is looking into the potential use of wasp venom as a cancer therapy. An active peptide found in the venom of tropical social wasps selectively destroys cancerous cells by causing their membranes to leak

“No way is it rats” my customer said “how would they get in” she said. “Let’s have a look under this very wobbly slab” ........silence! She will need a drain engineer as well. There are large gaps eroded away from the benching giving access to the property foundation and into the space under the floor.

‘Masonry’ (or ‘mortar’) bees are one of those solitary types that do not nest in a colony but within individual holes in the ground and occasionally in walls in mortar joints, soft bricks and stones themselves. In Britain, there are nearly 20 species, the most common being Osmia rufa (the Red Mason Bee). Masonry bees favour sunny, south-facing elevations, as these enhance the germination of their eggs. Nests are established in spring or summer and contain six to 12 eggs, each in a cell provisioned with pollen and nectar and sealed, usually with mud. New adults emerge the following year to repeat the cycle. Masonry bees are honeybee-like in appearance. The female has a sting but will not use it unless squeezed between your fingers!
