Ever noticed a metal plate on the outside wall of your house and wondered what it’s for? 🤔

It’s called a sweep hatch. Removing it gives direct access into the chimney so soot can be swept and removed safely and efficiently.

This chimney is connected to a SCAN wood burner. Although the chimney was swept externally, I still stripped the firebox down afterwards to carry out a full check over and thorough clean.

It’s all part of making sure your appliance and flue system are left clean, safe and working as they should.👍

🔥 Replacement rear fire bricks and chimney liner sweep on this stove in Sutton Coldfield🔥

Firebricks are the light-coloured panels that line the inside of your stove. Their purpose is to;

✅Protect the stoves steel or cast-iron body from direct flames and heat.

✅Reflect heat back into the firebox to improve combustion efficiency.

✅Help the stove burn hotter for longer while using less fuel.

They’re an essential part of your stoves performance, but they are also consumable components meaning they naturally wear down over time and need replacement.

🔥Smoke Evacuation Check...but why is the smoke moving downwards?⬇️

💨 A wood burning stove's airwash system keeps the glass clear by creating a protective curtain of air between the glass and fire. It pulls in cooler air from above, heats it and directs it down the inside of the glass, helping to stop soot and tar from sticking.

🎥 So in this video, the downward moving smoke isn’t a fault, it’s the airwash in action.

The clip shows a smoke evacuation check in progress, carried out in Lichfield on a Heta wood burning stove.

👍After every chimney sweep, I carry out this test to make sure the flue is drawing properly and your fire is operating correctly.

If your stove hasn’t been swept recently, now’s the perfect time to book in!

Storing combustible materials like logs too close to your stove creates a fire risk. Even without direct flames, the heat generated by your wood burning stove can cause scorching and smouldering, releasing flammable gases that can ignite when the ignition temperature has been reached.

✅ Always keep a safe distance between your log burner and any combustible materials.

🔥 What a difference 🔥

The first images are from my initial sweep on this wood burning stove. The flue entrance was completely blocked with heavy creosote buildup, along with large amounts of creosote throughout the chimney liner. A serious fire risk. ⚠️

Fast forward to todays yearly visit….and what a transformation.
Only fine, powdery soot present, no dangerous, flammable creosote.

This is a perfect example of how following advice on correct burning practices and proper use of your stove make all the difference. Not only safer, but far more efficient too.

✅ Burn quality dry fuel (below 20% moisture)
✅ Use the air vents correctly (don't slumber your stove)
✅ Get your chimney swept regularly.

The customer left a great 5 ⭐ Google review too.👍

🔥 Finished using your wood burning stove for the season?

Spring is the perfect time to book your chimney sweep. Removing the acidic soot now stops it sitting in your chimney all summer where it can cause corrosion and unpleasant smells.

A spring sweep keeps your chimney clean, protected, and ready to go when the colder weather returns in Autumn. 🍂🔥

Firewood needs to be properly seasoned before it’s ready to burn.

This means allowing the wood to dry until its moisture content is less than 20%. When wood is properly seasoned it burns hotter, cleaner and far more efficiently.

Burning wet or unseasoned logs,
⚠️ Creates excessive smoke.
⚠️ Wastes energy as the fire tries to evaporate water from the wood.
⚠️ Can lead to dangerous creosote build-up in your chimney.

Using dry, well seasoned firewood helps keep your stove performing at its best while also keeping your chimney safer. 🔥

Now this haul is all processed, it will be stacked and left to season ready for Autumn/Winter 2027.
