If there's one thing you can do today to improve your baby's sleep, this is where I'd start...

A predictable, relaxing bedtime routine is proven to help babies fall asleep and have better quality sleep. So what should an ideal routine look like?

- Start 30-45 minutes before you want baby to be asleep
- Warm bath - baby's temperature will drop when they get out, which helps promote sleep onset (falling asleep)
- Big bedtime milk feed earlier in the routine to avoid associations of falling asleep on the breast or bottle
- Into their dimly lit bedroom for their sleepsuit or jim jams (remember to dress them for the temperature of the room)
- Lullabies, stories, cuddles - to relax baby and have bonding time together
- Into their sleeping bag or swaddle, kiss good night, lights out

If little one struggles to settle for sleep on their own, you can use a responsive, age appropriate settling method to help promote independent sleep.

Remember, the routine should be exactly that - routine. Babies and children love routine as it helps them feel safe and gives them confidence of what is expected from them.

This Mum and Dad came to me when their little one was 7 months old experiencing multiple night wakes and unpredictable naps.

Mum wanted some freedom from contact naps to spend time with the older sibling, and a decent routine that suited the whole family.

We agreed a suitable:
- Daytime routine
- Settling method to help baby C fall asleep in her own cot
- Bedtime routine
- Plan to move baby C into her own bedroom

Within one week baby C was:
- Taking long, regular naps in her own cot
- Sleeping through the night
- Night weaned (an unintentional bonus!)

This meant Mum and Dad had:
- Quality time during the day with both children
- Quality time with each other in the evenings
- Proper sleep that helped them feel normal again!

“Thank you again so much, has made far more progress than I honestly thought possible.”

The clocks ‘spring forward’ by one hour during the early hours of next Sunday morning.

This is great news for early risers (hello reasonable wake up time!) but if you’re concerned about how to manage your little ones routine around the clock change, you have 3 options:

1️⃣ Do nothing (start Sunday on new timings)- best for little ones who have one or no naps, or little ones who are super adaptable

2️⃣ Shift bedtime by 30 minutes for two nights beforehand - also good for little ones who have one or no naps

3️⃣ Shift routine by 15 minutes for a few days beforehand: best for little ones who are on two or more naps, or who are more sensitive to change

I’ve written a blog to give more detail around these option:

If I were starting from scratch with improving my baby’s sleep, these are the 4 things I would think about.

If you feel like you’ve tried everything to improve your baby’s sleep and they’re still just . not . sleeping - it’s time to go back to basics. The biology of sleep is the same for most babies, and this helps us understand how we can support them for more settled nights

I have created the Jigsaw of Baby Sleep to show you the 4 basic foundations of great sleep:

🧩Conducive environment: The bedroom should be pitch black and quiet so your baby can switch off their senses for sleep. It should also be a comfortable temperature with baby dressed appropriately

🧩Appropriate daytime sleep: If your baby hasn’t had enough awake time before bed, they might fight falling asleep, or wake at the crack of dawn feeling well-rested. Ensure an appropriate balance of sleep during the day

🧩Relaxing bedtime routine: Studies show that a relaxing bedtime routine is conducive for falling and staying asleep. Think bath, milk, PJs, story and a lullaby to set the scene for sleep

🧩Responsive settling: Choose an appropriate settling method that you and your partner feel comfortable with, and that you can be consistent with. Consistency and confidence are often the keys to success

To understand more about the biology of baby sleep, which settling methods are most appropriate for your baby’s age, and how much sleep your baby needs, check out my downloadable Sleep Guides. My expert guidance without the full 1:1 support

Sleep deprivation shares a lot of traits with postnatal depression - and the two tend to go hand in hand during the early days of motherhood. One day you’re excitedly decorating your baby’s nursery and batch cooking freezer meals, and the next you’re spending your maternity leave pushing a swing in tears because you’re an emotional wreck.

I genuinely think that getting good sleep helped my recovery from PND. If my baby slept well, I slept well (sleep is therapy for your brain after all!), so I wanted to share with you the actions that I took towards great sleep for all of us:

💛Make a plan - Your own plan. Try not to listen to well meaning friends and family, do what works for you, from sources you trust, and use a method you feel comfortable with
💛Get your partner on board - talk honestly about how you’re feeling, and understand how your partner can support you - either during the day with household tasks, or during the night with the baby
💛Consistency - Be consistent with your plan and your routine. This may mean a 2 week period when you have more limited social events or classes, but your baby will appreciate the consistency to help them learn, and build their routine.
💛Professional help - If you haven’t already, enlist the support of your Health Visitor, GP, charitable organisation or trusted friend - even just talking to someone who listens can be therapeutic
💛Fresh air - Yes, I know we live in the UK where we barely see that big hot yellow thing in the sky, but just getting out into the morning light and moving your body (even with the pram in tow) can do wonders.

Working on your baby’s sleep doesn’t have to be overwhelming. You don’t need to leave your baby to cry alone for hours, and you don’t need to make record-breaking progress in the first couple of nights - take it at your own pace.
