According to a report published in the American Thoracic Society's American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, which followed more than 6,000 participants over a period of 20 years, long-term use of cleaning sprays caused significant health problems.

This negative effect was found to be more prevalent in women.

The study measured the participants' lung function by testing the quantity of air they could forcibly breathe out. These measurements were then compared with the answers obtained from a questionnaire given to all of the participants to gauge their cleaning habits and levels of cleaning activities.

"While the short-term effects of cleaning chemicals on asthma are becoming increasingly well documented, we lack knowledge of the long-term impact," said senior study author Cecile Svanes, MD, PhD.

"We feared that such chemicals, by steadily causing a little damage to the airways day after day, year after year, might accelerate the rate of lung function decline that occurs with age."

The take away message from this study is that long term usage of cleaning chemicals can cause serious damage to your lungs and switching to environmentally friendly and natural products can help prevent the development of various health issues.

𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

While strict rules on vehicles have reduced the emissions from road traffic, household cleaners have become a substantial source of air pollution in urban areas.

Researchers in the US examined the levels of synthetic "volatile organic compounds" or VOCs, in roadside air in Los Angeles.

The findings showed that as many VOCs came from household and industrial cleaning products which were refined from petroleum as from the exhaust pipes of vehicles.

These compounds react with other chemicals in the atmosphere to produce harmful ozone.

At ground level, this can cause breathing problems and the constriction of the airways. Fine airborne particles have the potential to worsen heart and lung disease.

An author on the study, Joost de Gouw commented that "for every kilogram of fuel that is burned, only about one gram ends up in the air.

For these household and personal products, some compounds evaporate almost completely."

This research highlight the need to move away from traditional cleaning products which contain harsh chemicals towards more sustainable products which do not cause harm to the environment.

Wet wipes are made primarily from polyester and contain many microfibres which are soaked in various chemicals. In Britain each year, tens of thousands of wet wipes are sold to consumers.

Unfortunately, despite numerous awareness campaigns, many people still flush used wet wipes into toilets. This can lead to main sewers becoming clogged and fish in rivers and other marine life dying when the fibres are released.

Thames21 reported that more than 5000 wet wipes had been collected in a 116 square meter area of the Thames river. Wet wipes can contribute to 'fatbergs' - giant lumps of congealed fat and rubbish which are found in sewage systems.

Furthermore, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) reported that, during an MCS 2016 Great British Beach clean, 'an average of 14.1 wipes for every 100m of our coastline were found... an increase of almost 700% wipes on our beaches over the last decade.'

To try and reduce the impact of plastic usage on the environment in the UK, a number of measures have already been put in place.

Microbeads which can kill marine life have been banned.
A 5p charge for all plastic bags has been introduced.
A ban on the sale of plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds which have plastic stems.

A deposit-return scheme for plastic bottles has been introduced in a number of stores in the UK.

Additionally, all the supermarket chains in the UK have pledged to remove unnecessary plastics from their shelves by 2025.

It is vital that we all take steps to reduce our environmental impact and diminishing our usage of non-biodegradable plastics is one way we can all contribute to the global effort to preserve our environment.

1. Safer Products

Conventional cleaning products which contain strong chemicals have the potential to cause chemical burns to the cleaner. Natural cleaning products do not contain corrosive chemicals and are less toxic than most cleaning products.

2. Improved Air Quality in the Home

Minimising the usage of household cleaners which contain strong chemicals can vastly improve the air quality in your home. Most people do not like the odour given off by strong cleaning products and switching to green cleaning options can negate this while still providing you with a clean living environment.

3. Cost Effective

When cleaning the home, natural products such as olive oil, white vinegar, lemon juice etc. can meet most of your cleaning needs while costing much less than conventional chemical cleaning products.

4. Cleaner Environment

Some household cleaners also release harmful chemicals into the environment. In some areas of the US, household cleaners contribute as many volatile organic compounds which produce harmful ozone as vehicle exhaust pipes. Making the change to green cleaning products can help reduce pollution to waterways and can help reduce your contribution to ozone depletion and climate change in general.

5. Healthier Home

Various studies have shown that household cleaning sprays can increase the chance of developing asthma. Using green cleaning products can help reduce the chances of developing asthma.

Switching to green cleaning products would mean harsh chemicals would no longer be absorbed into the skin or inhaled by the person doing the cleaning. These benefits would also be extended to others who live in the home as they would also no longer be exposed to harsh chemicals in cleaners.
