From the outside, hoarding is often misunderstood.
People see clutter, overflowing rooms, or unsafe living conditions — but what they do not see is the emotional pain, trauma, grief, anxiety, fear, or mental health struggles that may sit underneath it all.
During National Hoarding Awareness Week 2026, we want to help break the stigma surrounding hoarding disorder and encourage understanding, compassion, and support for those affected.
What Is Hoarding Disorder?
Hoarding disorder is a recognised mental health condition characterised by persistent difficulty discarding possessions, regardless of their actual value. Over time, items can accumulate to the point where living spaces become unsafe or difficult to use.
This is not simply “being messy” or “collecting too much stuff.”
For many individuals, possessions may represent:
* Safety
* Comfort
* Emotional attachment
* Memories
* Identity
* Fear of loss
* Control during difficult times
Hoarding can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, income, or lifestyle.
The Emotional Impact of Hoarding
One of the most overlooked aspects of hoarding is the emotional toll it has on individuals and families.
Many people living with hoarding disorder experience:
* Shame and embarrassment
* Anxiety around letting items go
* Isolation from friends or family
* Depression and hopelessness
* Fear of judgement
* Trauma-related responses
Often, people avoid asking for help because they are terrified of being criticised, evicted, laughed at, or misunderstood.
At Grotbags, we believe nobody should ever feel ashamed to ask for support.
The Physical & Safety Risks
While compassion is essential, it is also important to recognise that hoarding can create serious health and safety concerns, including:
* Fire hazards
* Trip and fall risks
* Blocked exits
* Mould and biohazards
* Pest infestations
* Structural damage
* Unsanitary living conditions
These risks can place vulnerable individuals at increased danger and may impact neighbours, landlords, carers, or emergency services access.
This is why early support and multi-agency working are so important.
What Causes Hoarding?
There is no single cause of hoarding disorder. Research suggests it can be linked to a combination of:
* Trauma or bereavement
* Anxiety disorders
* Depression
* OCD-related behaviours
* ADHD
* Autism
* Loss and attachment difficulties
* Childhood experiences
* Social isolation
In our work, we have seen firsthand how deeply personal hoarding can be. Every individual’s story is different, which means support should never be “one size fits all.”
A Trauma-Informed Approach Matters
At Grotbags Cleaning Services Ltd, we take a trauma-informed and non-judgemental approach to every hoarding support case we attend.
We understand that:
* Forced clearances can be emotionally damaging
* Trust takes time to build
* Small steps matter
* Dignity should always be protected
* Clients deserve to feel heard and respected
Sometimes the biggest difference is simply having somebody walk into a property without judgement.
Hoarding Support Is About More Than Cleaning
Supporting someone affected by hoarding is not just about removing items. It is about:
* Restoring safety
* Protecting dignity
* Building trust
* Reducing overwhelm
* Supporting wellbeing
* Encouraging independence
* Creating sustainable change
This is why collaboration between cleaners, social care, housing teams, mental health services, fire services, and community organisations is vital.
Let’s Reduce Stigma Together
Words matter.
Calling someone “dirty,” “lazy,” or “disgusting” only increases shame and isolation.
Compassion changes lives.
Education reduces stigma.
Understanding creates safer outcomes.
Behind every hoarded property is a human being — not a stereotype.
