So this week I've been on 'radio silence'. There's a very good reason for this....he's very cute and weighs 7lb.
Ive become a nanny again!!!! In love already.
Its been a week of mixed joy and sadness; sad at the loss of a much loved client x

Nobody warns you or talks about the part of care giving and the loss of a client who has become like family. We don't just leave and forget; we often go home to our safe space where we can process the loss and grieve for them.

No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, show up and never give up. Be proud of the person you are, and the difference you make

The generally agreed best practice for supporting individuals with dementia it to prioritise connection over correction. By doing so we are preserving their dignity and allowing us to focus on how the individual feels about a siutation, rather than the accuracy of what they are telling us. So when a client shared with me today that Tom Jones had been in to visit them, I simply asked them how that made them feel and was even given a little rendition of one of his tunes.
What a lovely day

Today is International Nurses Day, recognising the work and empowerment of nurses who save lives. A big thank you to all the amazing nurses out there!
As carers, we can often impart invaluable information about our clients to support other health care professionals in their work. When we see our clients (often 2 or 3 times a day) we can be best placed to pick up on small signs that things are 'different ' with our clients physical or mental wellbeing.
So, to the families who trust us to care and support their loved ones, for them, knowing that they are in safe hands can make all the difference, and to us as carers, having that trust and relationship is equally empowering.

Today I was reminded of a beautiful song by Tim McGraw called 'Humble and Kind'. Whilst talking to an elderly lady in a care home she shared her love of country music with me and life as a volunteer for the Salvation Army and the lyrics of the song came to me.
I spent a while talking with her and left knowing I'd made a small difference to her day

This week I had the pleasure of providing a sitting service for a lovely couple. One partner was able to leave the house for some much needed 'me time' whilst I got to spend some time getting to know the spouse better and learning about their younger years and their interest in all things farming.
To receive feedback on "the sense of relief as I drove away" means so much, and what a privilege to be able to support this couple

Ensuring our ageing population are able to keep abreast of modern technology is key, however, we all need to be mindful to promote education on the potential dangers of the Internet, irrespective of age. It's a poignant reminder that the elderly can be vulnerable and often lonely, and can turn to the Internet to fill a void. As carers we have a duty of care and safeguarding to meet both physical and emotional care needs. It's often surprising what gets disclosed to us as a trusted and safe individual, and responding appropriately and proportionally to those disclosures can make such a difference. Where appropriate, it's good to talk about the potential risks of romance scams and phishing or accepting unsolicited communication. Some of our clients don't have friends or family looking out for them and there are occasions when those making the unsolicited communication will attempt to isolate individuals or to keep the communication a secret. Let's keep our community safe and be that listening ear, that trusted person who makes a difference and who potentially averts a dangerous situation from developing.
