Each week we give you an insight in how we run the agency. This week ......

Whenever we advertise for cleaners, especially through the Job Centres, we get a lot of responses. Unfortunately, many of these are clearly unsuitable, and the applicants have given very little consideration to the nature of the job. Good practice dictates, however, that we treat every response as genuine and go through the requirements and explain what they need to provide in the way of references, proof of identification and residence. Typically, we never hear from them again. It may be that many of these enquiries are due to the new requirements for Job Seekers to show they have applied for so many jobs per week to get their allowance - in effect a box ticking exercise. If this is being repeated across the country, it represent a massive waste of resources for businesses trying to recruit new workers . Still, it is yet another reason for using an agency to get your cleaner.

October and November has been almost spring like, which seems to have stimulated our "one off" calls. Almost like our clients are going for a second spring clean! We do experience peaks and troughs, with early December normally being surprisingly busy, but with demand tailing off as we get nearer to Christmas. At present we are just plugging away, doing our courtesy calls to try to nip any problems in the bud.

We have spent last week sending out a newsletter to all of our clients advising them of an increase in our recommended minimum hourly cleaner rate. This has increased by 50 pence per hour - the first increase in 3 years. It is obviously necessary for to pay a competitive rate if we are to continue to recruit and retain good quality cleaners, and our clients appreciate this.

It's been a few weeks since my last update. we have been cleaning up the office disposing (safely and confidentially I may add) all old paperwork going back many years. It's incredible how much paperwork can accumulate in any business. And, oh the agony of deciding whether to throw stuff away, or whether to keep it .... just in case. But once you get going, a sort of wild frenzy develops and tons of stuff are tossed away!!! Quite liberating in a way. I hope we don't regret it!!!

Well, that's the election over. My thoughts? I was amazed that no one challenged the government's claim to have create 1,00 jobs a day (or whatever figure they came up with) over the life of the Parliament. If true, how does that equate with slimming down the public sector? Unless they mean that WE (that is you the customer, and me the small business owner) created jobs by you asking for a cleaner, so stimulating demand, allowing me to take on more staff. Typical government - taking all the credit, but never apologising for their mistakes!

An increasing trend has been the number of male applicants wanting to do domestic cleaning work. And why not? Although traditionally seen as a female dominated profession, surely in these enlightened times, we can embrace the notion of a male "daily help"? However, as ever, it is up to our clients to make the final decision ...

Ian has become a grandparent for the third time! Jessica Karen Jamieson was born last Thursday at 10:25 am weighing 7 lb 5 oz. So, Ian's mind has not been focused 100% on the agency. Not to worry .... Gisela and Angela run the place anyway!

Apologies for not posting last week, as Ian was in Spain on a short golfing holiday. It's great to get away for a holiday, charge the batteries and come back refreshed for the challenges ahead. Well, that's the theory, except Ian have been low on energy this week! On the cleaning agency front, our main focus has been on getting leaflets out to local households, advertising our services. The picture on the card is based on Land Girl posters during the war, and has served us well over many years. However, our franchisor is talking about changing our image - we'll keep you posted. Hope we don't lose too much of the old image though ........
