Carried out a patio restoration project in Hale recently involving a limestone surface that had been causing problems for several years.
Limestone behaves differently from sandstone.
The surface remains more porous and reacts badly to acidic substances, including certain cleaning chemicals.
The previous owners had apparently attempted cleaning with an unsuitable product that left etching marks across several slabs.
The current homeowners inherited both the etching damage and the ongoing biological growth that had established since.
The patio sat beneath a mature silver birch that dropped leaves, catkins, and seeds across the surface throughout the year. Shaded for most of the day, the stone rarely dried completely during autumn and winter months.
We cleaned the surface using chemicals specifically formulated for limestone, then addressed the pointing which had failed in several areas.
The etching marks remained visible on close inspection but became far less prominent once the surrounding contamination was removed.
The homeowners understood that complete restoration would require slab replacement in the affected areas.
Our work extended the usable life of the existing surface and returned it to a condition where using the patio felt pleasant again.
