Another year of reduction of combustion emissions reported by DEFRA on Household Stoves.
I bet the mainstream press and others never report this!

Defra has published the latest Emissions of air pollutants in the UK – Particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) - this being the data for 2024 - and it shows a 7.4% reduction in emissions from our sector.

Emissions of PM2.5 and PM10 from domestic combustion decreased by 7 per cent from 2023 to 2024. Looking at the longer-term trend, from 1990, emissions of both PM2.5 and PM10 from domestic combustion decreased by 76 per cent to reach the lowest level in the time series in 2009.

I've uploaded the SIA press release to the files section promoting this good news

Wood is a renewable fuel – when it’s sourced responsibly, it’s part of a natural cycle. 🌲🔥
Burning dry logs in a modern stove is a low-carbon, sustainable way to stay warm.
A great choice for cosy, resilient home heating.

Clean Air Night 2026 puts air quality in focus. The SIA explains why how we burn matters, and how practical choices can reduce emissions.

What you burn matters just as much as the stove you burn it in.

Using dry, well-seasoned wood is one of the simplest ways to reduce emissions and improve performance.

Just Like our own Logs on stoveindustrysupplies.com!

🪵 Burn wood with a moisture content belo 0–15% is ideal)
🪵 Look for the Ready to Burn label when buying fuel
🪵 Store logs correctly; dry, covered and well-ventilated
🪵 Use a moisture meter to check fuel before burning

Always avoid treated or painted wood and never burn household waste.

Your local chimney sweep is one of the most important air-quality advisers you have.

Regular chimney sweeping isn’t just about safety – it’s about performance and emissions.

A professional sweep can:

✅check your appliance is operating correctly
✅advise on fuel choice and burning habits
✅help identify issues that increase smoke

An annual sweep is one of the easiest steps households can take to burn better.

How you light and re-fuel your fire affects emissions.

Some simple changes can make a real difference:
🔥 Use the top-down lighting method
🔥 Use the correct sized logs for your stove – check the manufacturer’s instructions for guidance
🔥 Don’t overload the firebox
🔥 When refuelling open the door by a small amount to allow air pressure to equalise, before opening fully
🔥 Avoid slumbering the stove overnight

These practices will help improve combustion, reduce smoke and help ensure your stove performs as designed.

Something positive in the press

For the past 12 winters, Toby Walne's wood burner has kept his family warm - and helped to slash energy bills at their rural Hertfordshire home.

The stove industry wants to improve the air we breathe as we breathe the same air.
Have a look at the link below for a positive, factual and honest option.

The Stove Industry Association argues that upgrading to modern Ecodesign stoves, enforcing Smoke Control Areas and educating consumers offers faster, fairer air quality improvements than an outright ban on wood burning.
