Initially a temporary client for 6weeks over Christmas, a sweet little lady living with advanced Dementia has become a continued client of mine.
When I first started, she was just recovering from a chest infection and was not interested in interacting much. She would not accept much help from her family who she lives with, which became a big concern when it came to her personal care. In her mind, she was fine and is perfectly capable of looking after herself.
The family reached out; and prepared for a challenge, I put my Dementia Awareness hat on and went with the flow to establish trust and familiarity. I soon discovered some physical and environmental barriers which would have been affecting the Dementia mind that is no longer able to communicate discomforts and physical challenges. Working with the family, we managed to minimise any possible barrier and with each step we took, resistance decreased and with continuity and patience, success wasn't far.
Today we have showers three mornings a week, we chat and we laugh, even though most conversations make no sense; BUT we interact cheerily. This morning another milestone reached, when she said to me after having breakfast that we better get her in the shower as she needs a hair wash... For the first time she initiated our routine. She told me, she wasn't very good on her feet and better held my hand to be led into the bathroom.... A little triumph, which when you care makes your heart bounce.
On my next visit all may be different again, but today I take this moment and treasure it.
