After years of private study under several misunderstood European mentors, I’m finally ready to unveil my latest work:

Existential Crisis in Beige #4

This piece explores the tension between order and entropy through the aggressive interruption of accumulated domestic history. The vertical division represents the fragile psychological boundary between civilisation and collapse, while the lower horizontal plane symbolises the crushing weight of routine existence pressing against the human spirit.

The darker section intentionally preserves traces of lived experience, oils, particulate matter, forgotten decisions, whereas the lighter section serves as a brutal confrontation with clarity itself.
Many observers initially mistake the work for ‘part of a carpet cleaning job’, which only reinforces the central thesis: that modern audiences are uncomfortable when confronted with transformative truth.

9 years ago this month, Sparkling Ovens & Carpets officially started.

Although the journey probably started a few years before that.

Back in 2012, at 32 years old, I went back to university to study International Business while driving a taxi at night to pay the bills.

During that time my mum became seriously ill with cancer and sadly passed away in 2014.

I graduated in 2016 with a 2:1 and somehow managed to get all the way to the partner interview stage for a management consultant role with PwC.

I still remember being told:
“You could do the job… but we don’t think it’s for you.”

At the time that was hard to hear, but looking back they were probably right.

After a few more failed attempts at graduate jobs, I realised I needed to stop waiting on somebody else giving me an opportunity and just back myself.

That’s when Sparkling Oven Cleaning Company started (before it eventually became Sparkling Ovens & Carpets).

And no… it definitely wasn’t an overnight success 😂

For around a year I worked at NFU Mutual during the day selling insurance in Glasgow, then rushed home, got changed, and cleaned ovens most nights until around 9pm, plus weekends.

Looking back, I genuinely don’t know how I kept that pace up.

Over the years there’s been van breakdowns, equipment issues, quiet periods, times where the phone barely rang, stress, mistakes, COVID, and plenty moments where I questioned what I was doing.

But somehow, 9 years later, we’re still here.

Thousands of customers served.
Thousands of ovens and carpets cleaned.
And the business has grown into something far bigger than I imagined when I started with one oven cleaning kit.

Honestly, I’m grateful to every single customer who booked us, recommended us, shared our posts, or trusted us in their home over the years.

A lot of people only ever see the finished version of a business.

They don’t see the years behind it.

So thank you genuinely to everybody who helped us get this far.

⚠️ That new EES passport system everyone’s talking about…

We were told: – Long queues

– Delays
– Airport chaos

So we turned up 3 hours early just in case.
Reality? Straight through. No issues at all.

Travel day was:
7am taxi → Tenerife South
✈️ Prestwick
🚆 Glasgow Central
🚕 Just Home

All smooth.

STAY AWAY FROM AYR BEACH!!!!

Witnessed totally disgusting behavior on the beach at Ayr today. A man and a woman were arguing in front of a load of kids when she smacked him one on the head and it all kicked off between them. The police turned up and the policeman ended up having to use his baton on the man, but then the man actually managed to get the baton off the policeman and started hitting the policeman and the woman with it.
Then a crocodile turned up and stole all the sausages as the man shouted
"THAT'S THE WAY TO DO IT!!"

What a week…

I finally get my own van back on the road—and on the same week Iain, our operator covering Falkirk & Stirling, gets rear-ended.

Thankfully, no injuries. That’s the only part that really matters.

The van will be repaired, support is in place, and Iain will be back out doing what he does best shortly.
This is exactly why we build proper systems and proper backing behind our operators—bad luck doesn’t stop the business.
