We have written about many of the towns and villages that we sell in and around over on our website. Today, we talk about Brécey in the Manche Department of Normandy!
Brécey
The pretty town of Brécey (and its surrounding villages) sits just above Avranches and just underneath Villedieu-les-Poêles (a town we have already talked about here) and is approximately 20 minutes from both. It is perfectly placed to visit these larger towns, the sandy beaches of Carolles and Jullouville and also ideal for walking and hiking in the surrounding bridle paths in the area. It is also a fairly large town in its own right. What more could you ask for?!
It has an impressive, imposing Hotel De Ville (home to the Mairie) which looks onto the main parking area which also happens to host its weekly market on a Friday. It has a driving school, beauty parlour, restaurants, bars, 2 supermarkets, 2 vets, boutiques, florist, dentist, control technique centre (MOT centre) library and much more. It has everything you need for your day to day living requirements. It also has an Espace Culturel (community centre) which has been named after the late Mairie, Bernard Tréhet, who was highly thought of by the inhabitants – so much so they named their centre after him.
Just a little further down the road (but still in Brécey) there is a fabulous open air swimming pool that is open during the summer months. This is situated next to the commune’s clean and very affordable campsite, should you have family and friends who wish to stay there. There is also a small lake that you can walk around and opposite all of this, is a horse riding school, ideal for children wishing to learn.
It is no coincidence that a riding school should be in Brécey as it’s Collège (high school) is a renowned sports Collège. Students come from far and wide to study and board here if they are not local. They do so to take up horse riding and compete in national events with more traditional sports such as football, badminton etc also available. Brécey also has has two primary schools – one private and one local.
If you are still looking for things to do, you can go fishing at the nearby pond of Les Etangs du Val du Sée – this is ideal for families who wish to catch some carp and for serious fishers alike. There is also an excellent restaurant which is open all year around.
If this wasn’t impressive enough, Brécey is just a little over 30km from the famous Mont St Michel, so an ideal location to explore beaches, countryside and the 2nd most visited tourist attraction in France!
There is also a Chateau in Brécey – Chateau de Vassy – which you can now visit and is currently being renovated by its new owners.
Finally, don’t forget to explore all the surrounding pretty villages such as St Laurent De Cuves which also hosts the annual music festival Papillons de Nuit.
The village of Saint-Pois has beautiful off the beaten bridle pathways for you to explore either by walking, mountain biking, quad biking or horse riding. You can pick up all the various local walking guides from the Mairie and there are also walking groups that you can join. The other surrounding pretty countryside villages include; Le Petit-Celland, Les Loges-sur-Brécey, Le Grand Celland, La Chapelle-Urée, Tirepied-sur-Sée to name but a few!
