Roof cleaning is very satisfying and increases the value of a property. Besides the roof looking unkept and dirty, the moos, can over time damage the tiles.

Blue collar worker

Today (12.08.2024) was a very hot summer day here in Switzerland (33°-36°).

About two months ago I cleaned this pool and surroundings, however could not complete the job because we had months of rain. I had nothing booked for the afternoon, so thought that I might as well do the impregnation. This was a special request of the client as it makes cleaning the deck easier, however dangerous in Winter as the stone no longer absorbs water, which then freezes to slippery ice.

Nevertheless, it was very hot, in the direct sun with no shade, it was surely above 40°. The impregnation requires hand painting stone by stone which takes its time. In spite of a cool box full of cold drinks and a wide brimmed sun hat, I literally baked and baked.

While sitting there in the scorching relentless sun baking, I thought back of my childhood in sunny South Africa. Images of the road workers, gardeners and dust bin men toiling in the humid sweltering KZN summer heat popped up from the depths of my memory. I thought they were not so lucky as me and how very hard they work in “borderline” situations, and with a minimum wage.

Please, next time you have someone working for you and it is sweltering, make sure that they have enough refreshments and show understanding if they do not progress as fast normal.

(PS. I was like a dog with a bone in front of him. Sweating out of every pore and this cool crystal clear swimming pool next to me – that I could not just dip into)

In good faith.

Some weeks ago, I was called by a hard hearing old man to go make an offer – about 30 minutes away. A friendly old – very old gentleman greeted me at the door - without a walking stick. Said that the driveway and paving had not been cleaned in 30 years.

Whoever built the house in the 70’s did a good job as the stones were still pretty level and because of the correct runoff, there was not much moos.

He was amazingly bright, able to understand the process and challenge me. He lives alone in his well-kept old house, has a vegetable garden and still drives his Merc (which is not that old). He will turn 96 this year!

Yesterday, I rolled my sleeves back and blasted the 30 years of dirt away with 90° water. When packing up, he came out to tell me that he was very satisfied with the results and that everything looks much better.

This morning before leaving to complete the job, he calls me and informs me that late last night the ambulance picked him up and he is now in the emergency room in one of the biggest hospitals in Zürich and would not be home when I get there.

Shame he was concerned that I might need something. I said that he should focus on getting well and need not worry. I promised him that I will complete the work as agreed on and that all will be done when he returns.

Sometimes in life thoughts pop up and we ponder on them … then feel ashamed that we even thought such thoughts. And so was it while I was driving to his house. Hmmm …. 96 and in the emergency room … not good … I just hope I get paid. Then I felt guilty for thinking that – I hope he gets well and lives to enjoy his clean/refreshed environment and turns 100.

Tools of the trade

I have always said there is a lot I will do to pay accounts.
Today is one of them and I feel like I am again a rookie in the army.

Next to a client of mine - I cleaned and treated the house fassade last year - is a huge buildind sight with a massive dug out for 2 or 3 floors of underground parking. The sides have been secured with sprayed concrete. The overspray reached the house and I was asked to clean it.

Try visualize very small grey cement splatters on a white wall .. from 2 to 6 mm in size which must be cleaned 1 by 1.

With a cement removing agent and a toothbrush .. YES A TOORHBRUSH, I spent the morning teadiously cleaning spot by spot.

This afternoon I will preassure wash everything.

Wish you a nice day

A considerate dog owner

Today, Wednesday, 15.05.24 I had a good challenge cleaning a very nice premises on the Lake of Zürich. One could not notice the very small steps to the upper apartment.

The owners parents had a very old house on this prized property which the children tore down and built a new modern house with 3 apartments about 10 years ago.

My client, who has a dog said that she had much problems with her architect when she requested the very low steps – this because they are half the normal height and he did not want to build so. She said to him that she is the client and he should do as she requests.

And guess what her agreement was ….

She said that when her dog gets old, it will not have problems walking up the steps. Amazing how considerate people are when it comes to their pets ……. Great.

The time of the year when it is so cold that water freezes is coming to an end.
Here a picture of my morning routing emptying out ice blocks and filling with warm water for the birds.

That it is getting warmer is a good sign for my company, Burgpflege bei Myburgh, as soon I will get back to work cleaning stoneware and making people happy.

A rewarding assignment

At the end of December, I was contacted and asked to do some small DIY stuff and mount an old rifle. The client had inherited it from his grandfather. After making some suggestions, he requested that it be mounted onto a board.

At the sawmill, I chose a beautiful piece of local cherry wood; cut, planed and glued it. I removed the gun straps and custom-made metal attachments to the rifle. This turned out very satisfying as the weapon is now fixed to the wood – that is it cannot be removed – and the mountings are not seen. This makes the mount very “slick”.

20 odd years ago I found an old bayonet, which has been lying around collecting dust since then. It too is original from that era and fits perfectly onto the rifle. I polished up and added it to the mount.

Finished off with linseed oil and bees wax. The client was very pleased with the results and I am too.

Rifle history: The infantry weapon was designed by Rubin Schmidt in 1899 which uses 7.5mm with a magazine of 12 bullets and a straight-pull bolt action. This allowed the pull the bolt straight back to unlock the action, c**k the striker, extract, and eject the spent cartridge, and then push the bolt forward with a new bullet. This was a very advanced weapon for its time. It was in service from 1899 till 1958.
