This one has just been sitting unused for several years, leaving the leather stiff and hard. After some TLC, it’s back to being nice and supple.

Why does tack require regular cleaning?

Two significant reasons; safety and longevity. For today, we’ll focus on safety.

•While cleaning your saddle and equipment, you get to look closer at your tack than you would on a daily basis. It gives you a chance to thoroughly look for signs of wear, loose stitching, cracking or tearing. You’re looking under the skirt, at the underside and in all the nooks and crannies. You’re checking that the rigging is still solid, no rivets or screws are about to pop off. Check that nothing is poking out of the underside into your horse’s back (I once discovered a staple poking out of the underside that had come loose from the frame!) The same goes for bridles and reins; check that fastenings still look good, especially where leather folds over, to avoid reins breaking off mid-ride.

•A saddle cleaning needs to be about more than just getting dirt off your gear. It’s ensuring that when you put your foot in the stirrup, you can be confident that your equipment will do what it’s designed for to keep you safe. Better to find out that the top of your saddle fender or stirrup leather is about to wear out while cleaning rather then while doing a rising trot down a trail!
