"We Listen and we don't judge".

If you’ve been on social media lately, you’ve probably seen the "We Listen and We Don’t Judge" challenge. It’s a powerful idea, one that Wade described as “a challenge worth striving for.” And while I hope we can all take a step closer to that ideal, I’ll admit; it’s not always easy.

Let me share a story from my time as a client care worker within inner city health that profoundly shaped my perspective.

There was a gentleman at the center, reserved, kind, hopeful, and quiet. He kept to himself, and yet, there was an air of resilience about him. My curious mind always wondered, “What’s his story? How did he end up here? Why is he always alone?"

During lunch one day, I decided to sit with him. At first, if I’m being honest, my curiosity was tinged with judgment. He was tall, intelligent, and composed, educated, a man who seemed so out of place. But as he opened up, his story humbled me.

Years ago, he discovered he had a son he never knew about. The boy was 17 at the time of discovery, and the news filled him with excitement and a deep desire to make up for lost time. They bonded quickly and found joy in a shared hobby: parachuting.

Tragically, during one of their outings, the son’s parachute got stuck in a tree, and he fell to his death. The pain was unimaginable. This man, still grieving the years he had missed, was now consumed by guilt and loss. He faced judgment from the son's family, some of his family members, his community, who scrutinized him for the accident.

Overwhelmed by grief, regret, anger, shame, and isolation, he turned to alcohol. One drink became two, then more, until it consumed him. He lost his home, his community, and everything he once held dear until he left.

Sitting with him that day, I realized the importance of listening, not with curiosity laced with judgment, but with empathy and understanding. His story was a reminder that we all carry burdens others might never see.

This challenge, We Listen and We Don’t Judge is more than a social media trend. It’s an aspiration. And while none of us may fully master it, we can strive to listen with open hearts, without assuming we know someone’s journey.

I hope this story inspires you to listen a little more deeply and judge a little less often.

Understanding Septic Systems, How They Work, and Safe Cleaning Practices

Maintaining a clean home while using a septic system requires thoughtful product choices to protect both your system’s health and the environment. This post offers insights on how septic systems work, why septic-safe products are essential, and lists some effective, septic-friendly cleaning products for bathrooms, kitchens, general surfaces, and floors.

What is a Septic System?

A septic system is a self-contained underground wastewater treatment system that consists of a septic tank and a drain field. Waste is broken down by bacteria in the septic tank, allowing treated water to disperse safely into the drain field. Proper maintenance and the right products help prevent clogs, costly repairs, and environmental damage.

Why Proper Care and Septic-Safe Products Matter

Septic systems need a balance of beneficial bacteria to function effectively. Harsh chemicals or inappropriate products can kill these bacteria, causing system clogs, malfunctions, and even groundwater contamination. Using septic-safe products ensures the system’s long-term functionality and protects the surrounding environment. If you plan to hire a cleaning service, please make sure to advise them that you are on a septic system, as the approach to cleaning a home with a septic system differs from standard cleaning.

What Makes a Product Septic-Safe?

Septic-safe products should have the following characteristics:

Biodegradable: They break down naturally, reducing strain on the system.

Low in Phosphates and Chlorine: Minimizes potential groundwater contamination.

Free from Harsh Acids and Antibacterial Agents: Preserves beneficial bacteria in the septic tank.

Tips for Cleaning with a Septic System

Avoid Powdered Products: These can lead to build-up and clogs.

Use Water Efficiently: Too much water can overwhelm the system.

Dispose of Dirty Water Properly: Flush cleaning water down the toilet for safe treatment within the septic system. Do not pour water out into the ground as this can damage the soil, interfere with natural filtration, and contaminate groundwater.

Additional Cleaning Tips for a Septic-Friendly Home

Microfiber vs. Paper Towels: Microfiber cloths are a better option than paper towels for cleaning. Microfiber is reusable and doesn’t contribute to septic clogs, unlike paper towels, which don’t break down in the septic system. Reusing microfiber also reduces waste.

Swiffers and Disposable Wipes: Avoid using Swiffer wet pads or other disposable cleaning wipes. These do not break down in the septic system and can lead to blockages. Instead, opt for washable mop heads or cloths, which are more eco-friendly and septic-safe.

Recommended Septic-Safe Cleaning Products

Bathroom Cleaners

Attitude Bathroom Cleaner: A plant- and mineral-based cleaner that is eco-friendly and safe for septic systems, providing a gentle yet effective clean for bathroom surfaces.

Eco-Max Toilet Bowl Cleaner: Biodegradable and specially designed for toilets, this cleaner is effective without introducing harmful chemicals into your septic system.

Mrs. Meyer’s Toilet Bowl Cleaner: A natural and septic-safe product with plant-based ingredients, it offers gentle cleaning without harsh chemicals.

Sal Suds Biodegradable Cleaner by Dr. Bronner’s: Though technically a general cleaner, Sal Suds can be diluted for bathroom use. It's septic-safe, highly concentrated, and derived from natural ingredients.

Kitchen Cleaners

Eco-Max All-Purpose Cleaner: Safe for a variety of kitchen surfaces and designed for septic systems, this all-purpose cleaner is effective and environmentally friendly.

Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner: Safe for septic systems, this versatile cleaner works well on a variety of kitchen surfaces and is formulated without harsh chemicals.

Sal Suds by Dr. Bronner’s: A powerful, septic-safe cleaner that can be used on multiple surfaces in the kitchen, providing a tough clean while remaining gentle on the septic system.

General Cleaners

LifeWorks Cleaner: An environmentally friendly, biodegradable option that works well on various household surfaces while being safe for septic systems.

The Pink Solution Cleaner (not as abrasive)/ The Pink Stuff Paste (abrasive): Known for versatility, these cleaners are septic-safe and ideal for many general cleaning tasks especially the hard to remove stains.

Biokleen All-Purpose Cleaner: A plant-based, septic-safe cleaner that’s suitable for various surfaces, this cleaner is a great choice for environmentally conscious homeowners.

Floor Cleaners

Eco-Max Floor Cleaner: Specifically designed to be safe for septic systems, Eco-Max’s floor cleaner is both effective and eco-friendly.

Zep Floor Cleaner: A septic-safe cleaner that is effective on multiple floor types and is low in harsh chemicals.

Vinegar (with Caution): Though natural, vinegar should be used sparingly as overuse can alter the septic tank’s pH balance and negatively affect your floor’s finish.

Conclusion

Maintaining a clean home and a healthy septic system can be achieved by choosing the right cleaning products, and will help avoid costly repairs, protect beneficial bacteria in your system, and contribute to a safer environment.

Final Tips

Check Labels Carefully: Ensure products specify they are septic-safe or biodegradable.

Keep a Balanced Cleaning Routine: Aim for gentle products and avoid excessive chemical use to maintain a healthy septic system.
