Not every day duct cleaning is all that glamorous. Sometimes you just have to get down on your knees in a tight space and get dirty in order to get the job done. This old oil furnace was definitely hard to get at and definitely needed cleaning. 😕

Meet Trip and Taylor.
They live in a beautiful heritage home that's over 100 years old, with an old carpet runner on the original dark-stained staircase.
The runner has been there longer than the current owners can remember. In fact, they weren't sure if they'd ever had it professionally cleaned—or if anyone before them had either.
They actually vacuumed it before I got there.
Then I vacuumed it again.
That's what you see in the canister.
Years of dust, dirt and plenty of contributions from Trip and Taylor had worked their way down into the carpet where regular vacuuming just wasn't getting it all.
Then I cleaned the runner and the original wood stairs around it.
And just to see what was actually hiding in there, I emptied the dirty water into a clean bucket afterwards.
The homeowners were ecstatic with how it turned out.
Trip and Taylor took off and hid; apparently they liked the stairs the way they were just fine 😼.

Sometimes it's not dirt.
When I showed up to clean this carpet at a local daycare it had been left so long and had so much traffic that the backing was actually showing through.
I can clean dirt. I can remove a surprising number of stains. But once the carpet fibres themselves are worn away, no amount of cleaning is going to put them back.
That's one of the reasons I tell people not to wait until their carpet looks terrible before having it cleaned. Maintenance is always better than replacing it.

Did you know these come off?
I was at a customer's home cleaning their HRV system and dryer vents when I noticed their portable air conditioner. The filters were completely plugged up with dust and pet hair.
They had no idea the filters even came off.
And why would they? Nobody had ever shown them.
I wasn't there to clean their air conditioner, but it only took a couple of minutes to show them where the filters were, how to take them out, how to clean them themselves, as well as how often to check them and why airflow matters.

I cleaned this bathroom fan yesterday, and it reminded me how easy these are to forget about. Most people never think about their bathroom ceiling fan...until it stops doing its job.

Over time, dust builds up on the fan blades and inside the housing. When that happens, the fan can't move as much air as it was designed to. Less airflow means more humidity stays in the bathroom, which can lead to foggy mirrors that take longer to clear, lingering moisture, and over time can contribute to musty smells or even mould. Regular use of bathroom fans helps remove excess moisture from the air.
The good news?
Cleaning it is usually quick and can help it move air properly again while also extending the life of the fan.
It's one of those little things that's easy to forget about, but it makes a bigger difference than most people realize.

This is Nia, she is an 8 month old puppy who has her way with carpet. After multiple attempts to clean up after Nia herself, along with a $500 machine purchase that didn't solve the problem, they called us and I made a new friend in the process.
