$20 per foot for cut, polish and wax?

Recently, a customer contacted me about a 30ft sailboat.
The request was for cut / polish / wax on the hull and topsides, with the boat sitting in the water.

I quoted the job based on the real scope: access, machine polishing, oxidation level, materials, time, safety, and the level of finish required.

The customer replied that someone else quoted him $20/ft in the water, and another place could haul the boat out and do it for $40/ft.

Here is the reality:

$20/ft for cut, polish, and wax on a boat in the water is not professional gelcoat restoration.

It may be a quick wash, a light wipe-down, or wax over oxidation. It may look better for a short time, but that is not the same as properly restoring and protecting gelcoat.

Proper cut / polish / wax includes surface preparation, oxidation removal, machine polishing, proper pads and compounds, wax or sealant protection, and careful work around rails, hardware, windows, deck areas, and tight access points.

When a boat is in the water, the job becomes even more demanding. You are working from the dock or a floating platform, moving around the hull safely, controlling tools near the water, and taking the time to do the work properly.

So the real question is not just: “Who is cheaper?”

The real questions are:

What exactly is being done for that price?
How much time is actually being spent on the boat?
What products and process are being used?
Is the oxidation being removed, or just covered with wax?
Will the finish last, or disappear after a few washes?

In boat detailing, you can always find someone cheaper.

But cheap polishing often becomes expensive later, because the gelcoat remains dull, chalky, and poorly protected — and then the job has to be done again properly.

We quote based on the real condition of the boat, the access, the oxidation level, and the result the owner expects.
