Before you get to washing anything, make sure to take a second and read the garment’s care label, as it will tell you whether the piece can go into the washing machine, needs to be hand washed, or if it’ll need to be taken to a professional cleaner. If the symbols on the label look like gibberish to you, check out our guide to laundry care symbols!

When it comes to knitwear, it is crucial that you check the fiber content and care label before following a specific washing method, as knit sweaters could be made from cotton, wool, acrylic, or a blend.

Although cashmere feels luxurious and can feel a little daunting to take care of, it usually needs less washing than you might think. We typically recommend that after each wear, you let the piece air out before you fold it away. If there is any light dirt, gently brush it off the cashmere rather than washing the entire garment.

Delicates, heavy outerwear, and everyday knits should never share the same wash cycle because heavier items can damage delicate fibers during the spin.

Gently adjusting a knit sweater back to its original shape right after washing ensures it dries into the correct silhouette without warping. Reshape the sweater before laying it flat on a clean towel or drying rack. Do not hang, as this can cause the knitwear to stretch and will damage the fibers.

Add 2–3 drops of essential oil (like lavender, cedarwood, or eucalyptus) directly onto the wool dryer balls before tossing them in. This naturally freshens stored fall clothes without harsh synthetic chemicals or oily spots on delicate fabrics.
