🚨Warning!

This is a perfect example of why you should use a knowledgeable gas fitter even if they cost more than using the cheapest guy!

In the following pictures the first few are showing an improperly installed pool boiler vent . This vent wasn’t screwed together correctly and it fell apart causing the exhaust fumes and products of combustion to escape into the mechanical room which then fills this mechanical room with those fumes. When the fumes are re-burnt in the boiler this causes the boiler to produce carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is deadly and can kill you. This condition was exasperated because the original installer never installed the required combustion and ventilation air ducts so they were starving the boiler of fresh air which again causes the boiler to create carbon monoxide and soot. The soot plugs the boiler up and if not addressed this can destroy your new boiler. Long story short just hire the more knowledgeable person.

A class A gas fitter is the most knowledgeable person in the gas fitting industry and is essentially a doctor of gas fitting. At Dynasty we have been class A gas fitters for more than 20 years so we definitely have the knowledge and ability to out perform the vast majority of other people in the industry!

In the second set of pictures we see another pool boiler that was installed in an even worse way which is hard to do, based on the problems found on the first job. This pool boiler was installed using thin wall drier vent ducting and was vented horizontally instead of vertically which is required for category 1 non-sealed vents. Only category 3 sealed stainless steel venting can be installed horizontally. This will cause this existing venting to rot out and leak products of combustion in no time.

We also found the gas line installed incorrectly using a flex line which is meant for low pressure gas lines of less than .5 psi . It was installed on a 2 psi line. This flex line is over pressurized by 4 times its max working pressure. This is a safety hazard as it could cause a blow out which could cause a fire or worse an explosion.

Finally it too was installed in a room without combustion or ventilation fresh air. This will destroy the boiler as stated above .

These two jobs were both found on the same day by the same gas fitter in Surrey which just shows how prevalent these undertrained individuals claiming to be gas fitters are . I’m finding these issues almost daily!

This is why the cheaper guy is generally the wrong choice ! Unfortunately I’m seeing more extremely poor installs lately. Be very careful who you let work on your home! It could save your life!

A direct vent termination on a free-standing gas fireplace was installed incorrectly, causing harmful combustion gases to flow back into the fireplace instead of venting safely outside. This resulted in dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide entering the living space, leading two short-term vacation renters staying at the property to seek medical attention for suspected carbon monoxide exposure.

Got to use our metal detector today to find a 50 year old curb stop water main shutoff that the lawn had overgrown. We cleaned up the lawn as well so this shutoff can be found in an emergency!

🚨A lesson on why it’s so important to hire knowledgeable trades professionals!

Today we were working on a 2.5 million BTU super hot boiler for an apartment building in Burnaby. This boiler is about 30 times more powerful than the average home heating furnace or boiler.

Unfortunately a larger company really screwed this building over by illegally installing an additional 600,000 BTU domestic water heating boiler into an existing mechanical room that wasn’t designed for the addition. Beyond not pulling permits they have destroyed basically both boilers in this mechanical room with their poor installation and the building will likely be forced to spend thousands to 10’s of thousands to correct everything properly.

They removed the existing heat exchanger system then piggybacked the gas, combustion air and exhaust venting off the existing heating boiler without even investigating if the old system had the capacity to add another boiler.

Unsurprisingly the existing gas supply was too small to add another 600,000 BTU boiler too it but they did anyway . Likely the existing exhaust venting and combustion air supply are massively undersized as well. As a result this old heating boiler has destroyed itself along with the newer domestic boiler as well . Both boilers have been under supplied with gas causing improper combustion and worse. This can also be a fire hazard as it can cause the flames to flash back into the burners or worse piping , which is a fire risk , causes premature sooting of the entire boiler and can destroy your equipment by overheating or warping parts that aren’t meant to get that hot.

In the larger heating boiler, the sooting caused the heat exchanger to plug up, over heating the boiler and damaging internal components and then causing the main flames to roll out and start damaging the controls. This overheating also warped the internal heat refractory brackets causing the refractory to collapse onto the burners again making everything worse.

Fortunately the boiler safeties eventually stopped the boiler before the building caught fire.

I believe this kind of poor workmanship is becoming more and more common as business struggle to stay afloat in hard economic times. Business are being forced to start cutting corners to save a few bucks so they can make sure they win contracts. Then they hire less trained employees because they can pay them less . This will lead to disaster as things are being installed very poorly. Unfortunately customers don’t understand the difference between a good job and a hack install so they never know until it’s too late.

Regrettably I’m finding these kinds of problems quite often and more so on residential projects as there’s even less oversight there.

Homeowners, you need to be very vigilant and make sure you’re hiring knowledgeable people not just the cheapest option or biggest company that advertises the most in your area . You will regret it if you don’t do your due diligence.

I also plead with other contractors please start investing in your employee’s education and training. It’s not worth risking lives. Yes times are tuff but we can do better. Be big enough to admit you don’t know everything. Bring in help that understands your customers requirements if you don’t know something.
