I would like to take a moment away from all things cleaning to talk about something near and dear to my heart, and many of yours as well.
Our community is built on hard work, kindness, and supporting one another— which is why it’s so important to speak up when good people are unfairly criticized.
Many of you know Peaceful Loft and the heart behind it. Paulo is an educated man who for years was an engineer back in Macao, he decided that his time in that field was finished and after turning down quite a significant raise to stay, he instead packed up and moved to Newfoundland with a dream— not to get rich, but to learn to cook and to care for people through food. Together, he and his wife run the entire restaurant themselves. Paulo serves every table personally, and his wife prepares every dish with care. It is truly a two person operation built on passion and pride.
Anyone who has dined there knows that beyond the delicious food and modest prices, what truly sets Peaceful Loft apart is how Paulo treats his guests. He takes immense pride in making sure every customer is properly looked after and never leaves hungry. Because there are only two of them, they can only accommodate a certain number of tables at a time. Paulo has always chosen quality of care over quantity of customers, never taking on more than they can reasonably serve. We’ve all been turned away at some point, even us regulars, and like most of you I’m sure— have never taken it personally.
It is deeply upsetting to see accusations of racism directed at someone whose life’s work has been centered around welcoming and caring for others. If someone was unable to be served at a particular moment, it would only have been because two people can only do so much at once, not because of anything else. Had the individual simply paused to ask for an explanation, they would have learned this. Instead, assumptions were made, and a formal complaint was filed with the Human Rights Commission— a step that could carry serious consequences for a small, family run business. Legal fees and the stress of defending against what we firmly believe to be a false accusation are burdens they should not have to bear.
This small, hardworking family business has built a loyal following in our community for a reason. We encourage anyone who has experienced Paulo’s kindness and dedication to share your positive experiences, continue supporting Peaceful Loft (or for the first time), reach out to our Human Rights Commission, share this post, leave them a google review, reach out to news sources if you know them and help ensure that fairness and truth guide the conversation.
Let’s stand by the people who have consistently stood by our community.
