Greetings!
First of all, I would like to thank AA Munro Insurance for organizing this campaign and for continuing to support the men and women that make up our fire service across Atlantic Canada. We are proud to serve our communities, and the recognition we receive as well as the monetary prize is a huge boost not only to moral, but also to providing the life saving equipment we require to do our jobs.
A little about me. I am a proud member of the Souris Fire Department for the past 20 years. I am also a career Paramedic. I love what I do.
Our department is comprised of 28 men and 2 women. We have a good mix of veteran and new firefighters, that come from all walks of life and bring a range of expertise to the job. One of our active firefighters will be receiving his 65 year recognition this coming month!! This is something that is almost unheard of today! Although he no longer drags a hose or goes up on a roof, he is still very engaged and brings well over a half century of knowledge, that he is always eager to share.
We also have a second paramedic in our ranks, and at minimum, 12 fully trained medical first responders. As with most departments, medical calls and motor vehicle collisions account for approximately 70 percent of our call volume. As a paramedic that has worked all across the Province of Prince Edward Island, and has worked along side most every fire department province wide, I can say that I am very proud of the level of expertise each of our members bring with them.
Our Dept is nestled in the beautiful Town of Souris, PEI. Although our population is a little smaller, we are tasked with protecting one of the largest geographical areas in the Province. Our fleet includes a boat to provide water and ice rescue, a forestry firefighting truck, as well as 3 pumper trucks, a tanker pumper and a heavy rescue unit. We also have a UTV for overland rescue which was bought through the fundraising efforts of our Souris Fire Fighters Association and the Souris Legion Branch 3.
On top of a more than 50 percent rise in call volume just this past year, our dept is very active in fundraising, community events, fire hall tours with students, school presentations, just to name a few. You can also find our members out in the community in an off duty capacity, perhaps helping seniors shovel snow after a bad storm, stocking a community food pantry, assisting with a parade or filling someone’s swimming pool. Hero’s, doing everyday acts of kindness.
We are truly blessed to have such dedicated members of our community, not only here in Souris, but all across this Country. Firefighters are a family, and I am proud to be a part of that family.
Again, we thank you for this opportunity and for AA Munro’s commitment to our fire service.
Best Regards
Robin Croucher
