🐭 Welcome to Fact Friday!
Today, we are continuing to learn more about rats!
🌎 Habits and Control:
• Primarily nocturnal but constantly exploring their surroundings. If the area is quiet and undisturbed, they can sometimes be seen during the day.
• They are also known to be excellent swimmers 🏊♂️
• Very cautious and shy away from new objects and changes
• They have poor eyesight and mainly rely on smell and touch
• Opportunistic feeders — will eat anything. Once a food source is found, they tend to eat their fill in one visit and will return time and time again to known food sources. They will also carry off food to hoard in their burrow.
• They can chew through almost anything to get to food and water 🦷
🚨 Signs of Infestation:
• Gnaw marks – Fresh chew marks are rough and messy. Older marks are smoother and worn down by travel and wear.
• Droppings – Large with blunt ends, 18–20 mm in length. They will defecate frequently during their daily activities, especially in areas where they feed.
• Rub marks – Dark, greasy marks on vertical surfaces from natural oils in their fur. Rats travel along established runways (consistent paths along walls, fences, and stacked items).
• Damaged goods – Rats will eat anything but prefer meat, fish, dry cereal, and pet food 🥣
• Burrows – Rats are social creatures and prefer to nest in burrows along riverbanks, railroads, piles of rubbish, under concrete slabs, and decks. Burrows typically have 1 entrance and 1 exit, usually larger than 12 mm (½ inch).
🛠️ Control:
The key to any rat problem is identification, sanitation, elimination, and rat-proofing a building.
Things to consider:
• Rats are gluttons
• Prefer minimally disturbed areas
• Usually have to have access to both food and a water source
✨ Cleaning inside and outside your home is essential to help prevent these pests — the cleaner, the better!
