Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is more than just a buzzword — it’s a smarter, more effective approach to pest control. 🐜🚫

IPM combines multiple techniques to not only eliminate pests, but also prevent future infestations through proper monitoring, sanitation, and treatment strategies.

A proper IPM program includes:
✔️ Detecting pest activity
✔️ Identifying the pest problem
✔️ Choosing the correct treatment method
✔️ Cleaning and sanitizing to remove breeding conditions
✔️ Using both chemical and non-chemical solutions
✔️ Regular monitoring and prevention

The goal isn’t just to treat the problem — it’s to create a healthier, long-term solution. 💪

🐜🏡 FRIDAY PEST FACTS ARE HERE! 🏡🐜

We’re back with more helpful pest knowledge, and today we’re continuing the conversation about ants! Knowing how to identify ants and understanding why they may enter your home can help you spot issues early and take action.

🔍 HOW TO IDENTIFY ANTS 🔍

✅ 3 sections to the body: Head, Thorax, and Abdomen
✅ Colors can range from black to red
✅ Usually have 6 long legs and 2 antennae
✅ Depending on the species, they can range from small to large
✅ Large winged ants are often seen in spring — these are carpenter ant queens looking to start new colonies

🏠 ANTS IN YOUR HOME 🏠

Ants often invade homes searching for sugary or sweet foods. Regular cleaning and removing food debris is one of the best ways to help prevent ants from becoming unwanted guests.

Helpful prevention tips include:

✔️ Keep surfaces clean
✔️ Remove food crumbs and spills
✔️ Trim plant life around your house
✔️ Turn mulch in gardens regularly
✔️ Keep mulch away from your foundation

Ants may seem easy to spot, but they can also be misleading. Seeing only a few ants around your home could mean there are more hiding in cracks, cabinets, or other hidden spaces.

Tick season is here 🌿🕷️

After being outside, check yourself, your kids, and pets—especially behind knees, under arms, and around ears.

If you find a tick, remove it promptly! Stay safe and enjoy the outdoors!

Why don’t ticks play Hide and Seek? - Because they always get spotted.

That was a joke, ticks are not.

Pourquoi les tiques ne jouent-elles pas à cache-cache ? - Parce qu’on les repère toujours.

🐜✨ Tune-Up Your Knowledge Tuesday is BACK! ✨🐜

Today’s tiny topic with a BIG impact… ANTS!

Did you know ants are among the most successful insects on the planet? These little powerhouses live in highly organized underground colonies with three important roles:

👷‍♀️ Worker Ants
The backbone of the colony! These wingless females handle it all—building and maintaining the nest, caring for the young, protecting their home, and foraging for food.

👑 Queens
The leaders of the colony! Larger in size (and sometimes winged), queens are responsible for laying eggs and growing the colony. Some colonies even have multiple queens!

🪽 Males
Short-lived but important—male ants exist to mate with queens. They usually have wings and only live for a few weeks.

🌎 Fun Fact: There are over 700 species of ants in North America, but only about 25 commonly invade homes. Each species behaves differently, which means proper identification is key to effective control.

🏡 Seeing ants marching through your home, cabin, or business? Don’t let them take over!

🐭 Welcome to Fact Friday!
Today, we are continuing to learn more about rats!

🌎 Habits and Control:

• Primarily nocturnal but constantly exploring their surroundings. If the area is quiet and undisturbed, they can sometimes be seen during the day.

• They are also known to be excellent swimmers 🏊‍♂️

• Very cautious and shy away from new objects and changes

• They have poor eyesight and mainly rely on smell and touch

• Opportunistic feeders — will eat anything. Once a food source is found, they tend to eat their fill in one visit and will return time and time again to known food sources. They will also carry off food to hoard in their burrow.

• They can chew through almost anything to get to food and water 🦷

🚨 Signs of Infestation:

• Gnaw marks – Fresh chew marks are rough and messy. Older marks are smoother and worn down by travel and wear.

• Droppings – Large with blunt ends, 18–20 mm in length. They will defecate frequently during their daily activities, especially in areas where they feed.

• Rub marks – Dark, greasy marks on vertical surfaces from natural oils in their fur. Rats travel along established runways (consistent paths along walls, fences, and stacked items).

• Damaged goods – Rats will eat anything but prefer meat, fish, dry cereal, and pet food 🥣

• Burrows – Rats are social creatures and prefer to nest in burrows along riverbanks, railroads, piles of rubbish, under concrete slabs, and decks. Burrows typically have 1 entrance and 1 exit, usually larger than 12 mm (½ inch).

🛠️ Control:

The key to any rat problem is identification, sanitation, elimination, and rat-proofing a building.

Things to consider:
• Rats are gluttons
• Prefer minimally disturbed areas
• Usually have to have access to both food and a water source

✨ Cleaning inside and outside your home is essential to help prevent these pests — the cleaner, the better!

🐭 Today is Tune-Up Tuesday!!
A day to tune up your knowledge and learn something new! Today, we are learning about rats!

In the Saint John area, we only have one species of rat local to the area — the Norway rat, often called a wharf rat or sewer rat.

📏 Description:
• Head and body: 18–25 cm
• Tail: 15–21 cm
• Coarse, shaggy brown fur with a grey to yellowish-white belly

They have a blunt muzzle, small beady eyes, and small ears.

Young rats are often confused with mice — here’s how to tell the difference:

🐭 Young rats have large feet, small eyes, small ears, and a larger head
🐁 Mice have small feet, large eyes, large ears, and a smaller head

🐣 Pregnancy and Breeding:
Rats can begin producing young as early as 2 months of age and can have 7–8 young per litter. The average gestation period is 21–25 days.

🌙 Habits:
• Primarily active at night but constantly exploring their surroundings
• Prefer to live in burrows but can be found under concrete slabs and decks
• Can travel 100–150 feet from their burrows to search for food

They are opportunistic feeders and will eat anything available, including garbage, rotting food, debris, crumbs, and more. 🗑️

Due to their stubborn nature and sharp teeth, they can chew through almost anything, allowing them to enter your home.

⚠️ It’s best not to leave garbage or food lying around your yard or home, as human and pet health can become an issue if rats invade your space.

👉 Stay tuned for our next post explaining how to prevent these unwanted house guests and how to get rid of them!
