Great tips to keep in mind this winter!

‘Tis the season for festive cheer but some common holiday decorations can pose serious risks to wildlife! Here are some ideas on what to use and what to avoid:

Natural décor isn’t just beautiful - it’s biodegradable, safe for wildlife, and supports sustainable habits. Try using:
🌲 Pinecones, evergreen boughs, and cedar garlands (just be sure to source responsibly!)
🍊 Dried citrus slices, cinnamon sticks, and cranberries (indoors)
⭐ Upcycled wood ornaments
❄ Paper snowflakes or garlands

Care should be taken to avoid some items outdoors including:
❌ Tinsel & Mylar garlands - animals can ingest or become entangled in shiny plastic strands
❌ Artificial snow (spray-on frost) - contains chemicals that can contaminate soil and water, harming insects, birds, and small mammals
❌ Fishing line, wire, or sparkly ribbon used outdoors - these create entanglement hazards for birds and squirrels
❌ Edible decorations outside (like popcorn strings) - they can attract wildlife into unsafe areas, encourage dependency on human food sources, or lead to conflict

If you’re also hanging decorations outdoors, make sure they’re securely tied so they don’t blow away or become an entanglement risk, and remove promptly after the holidays.

Wishing you a bright, eco-friendly, wildlife-safe holiday season!

In Nova Scotia, wildlife is most likely to be a problem in the spring, when animals become more active. Skunks (mainland NS only), squirrels, and raccoons are seeking reliable sources of food and nesting materials, or may have caused property damage over the winter that is now visible as the snow melts.

Here are some wildlife prevention tips for the spring.

1. Remove any food sources from outside, including wild bird seed and food for pets.

2. Store garbage in tightly sealed trash cans. If lids don't work well, secure with bungee cords and consider storing inside a garage or shop.

3. Tree branches, lattice or exterior pipes may give access to your roof, attic or exterior windows. Consider trimming branches, moving lattices, and monitoring exterier pipes for signs of animal activity.

4. Block entry areas under your deck or porch to prevent animals from nesting underneath those places.

Spring means returning wildlife – including female bats! As spring sets in, bats are waking up from hibernation or migrating back from their southern winter homes. 🦇 Blog link is in the comments below 👇

Wildlife Wednesday ~

Right now in the coyote world, many of the pups are emerging from the den, playing around the mouth of the den, and exploring beyond the safety of the den. This can be a very unstable and risky time for coyote parents and their young families due to den intrusions from people and/or dogs, infrastructure changes, and other environmental, naturally occurring factors (den caves in, isn't suitable, parents feel location is not safe).

Finding a safe, quiet, and clean alternate den isn't always a simple solution or success for the parents. They will do the very best that they can to establish a temporary den site. That can mean multiple transfers of the pups.

Here are 3 simple guidelines to help you help wild families adjust and keep our pets safe:

When parents move a pup from the natal den, they must carry them in their mouth unless the pups are developed enough to follow their parents. Pups at this developmental stage are still vulnerable to dog attacks, birds of prey, and people.

1. Please don't interfere during these transitional events unless the pup is in imminent danger (parent hit by a car, spooked by a dog or person and drops the baby), move them to safety in the direction mom/dad was going; out of direct sunlight, preferably underneath a bush/tree, and observe from a distance and out of sight.

2. Walking a dog using a leash is always a responsible action. Greenspaces are home to many wildlife species. Dogs and wildlife are not a good mix under any circumstance.

3. Social distancing is the best approach. Making sure to give coyote parents and their pups space when actively moving their young is needed. Do not approach, chase, or allow a dog to harass them. Do not offer a food handout to wildlife.

Remember: coyotes do not abandon their young ones. They are devoted to them. If you find yourself in a situation where you are not sure what to do, please reach out to us for assistance. Coyote parents always make the best parents.
