The Rise of All Natural Cosmetics
Although the increase in all natural cosmetics should seem like a positive thing, as an empowered consumer its important to know that the term "all-natural" is not regulated by any regulatory body whatsoever. So a company can make that claim and really put whatever they want into their products. I thought I would break down a couple of the synthetic, and potentially harmful, ingredients that are going into all-natural cosmetic products.
Phenoxyethanol - this is a synthetic ingredient being used as a preservative in place of parabens. It is often found in face cleansers and other skin care products, but also in jet fuel, lacquer and paint. It is a suspected carcinogen, and has been found, when in high concentrations, to cause reproductive issues and have effects on the nervous system and brain.
Behenamidopropyl dimethylamine - This ingredient is well known for causing severe irritations to the skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Studies have shown that short term skin contact may cause minor irritations, and that prolonged contact may result in necrosis of the skin. Furthermore, available data suggests that it may act as a carcinogen and toxin to the immune system, respiratory system, nervous system and liver. For this reason, the European Union has set restrictions on its use. It is most often found in shampoos and hair conditioners.
So..... Read labels. If these ingredients pop out of the often huge list of ingredients, this is not a true all natural product.
Another tip, buy products that have fewer ingredients, shoot for 6 or less.
And lastly, make your own products where you can, and shop from your local artisans. Although these products seem more costly, if you don't have your health, what good will money do for you?
