How does a septic system work?
A septic system is an on-site wastewater treatment system that treats and disposes of household sewage. The basic components of a septic system include a septic tank and a drain field.
The septic tank is a large, watertight container made of concrete, fiberglass, or polyethylene that receives the waste water from your home. The solid waste settles to the bottom of the tank, forming a layer of sludge, while the lighter grease and oils rise to the top and form a layer of scum. Bacteria in the tank break down these solids and liquids, reducing their volume and creating a partially treated wastewater.
The partially treated wastewater then flows out of the tank into a series of pipes in the drain field, which is a shallow trench filled with gravel or rocks. The wastewater is dispersed into the soil through the drain field, where it is further treated and purified by natural processes.
It is important to note that proper maintenance and use of the septic system is necessary to keep it functioning effectively. This includes avoiding the use of household chemicals and excessive amounts of water, as well as regular pumping of the septic tank to remove accumulated solids and scum.
