Not all liquid de-icer is the same. Salt brine (23% sodium chloride) is where we started 30 years ago — works down to about -8 to -10°C, and it's a fine starting point for some operations. Our sugar beet blend works down to -25°C, built for Southern Ontario's harder cold snaps.

Apply before the storm, and you create a barrier it can't stick to — less labor, less material, less environmental impact, and the job actually gets done right.

"We sprayed the whole lot and there's still ice everywhere. Liquid doesn't work." I get this call more than you'd think — and I already know what happened.

Liquid is an anti-icing product. Spray it BEFORE the storm, not after ice has already bonded to the pavement. Get the timing right, and this mistake disappears completely.

You don't have to go all-in on liquid de-icing overnight. Start with your walkways, move up to your first lot, then scale from there. Most guys land on a hybrid — liquid before the storm, treated salt to clean up after — and use a lot less material overall.

A real transition takes 2-3 years. Start small, prove it to yourself, then grow into it.

Salt hit $300 a ton last winter — up from $100-120 the year before. That's a crisis for anyone running straight salt.

Guys running liquid felt it a lot less, because proper anti-icing uses 60-70% less product by volume. More liquid, less salt protects your margin when the market moves. And it will move again.
