Helping a senior declutter is about much more than removing belongings. It is about protecting dignity, preserving memories, improving safety, and making the home feel easier to manage.

Start small, ask permission before moving anything, and allow time for stories connected to meaningful items. Focus first on clear walkways, accessible storage, and reducing anything that may create a fall risk.

Short, calm sessions are often more successful than trying to complete everything at once.

A calmer space can support greater comfort, safety, and independence at home.

There’s something special about a home that feels lived in💙

A fresh pot of coffee.

Fresh flowers on the table.

The morning newspaper.

A favourite chair by the window.

And the feeling of coming home to a house that simply feels... cared for.

Some of life's best memories are made in ordinary moments.

At Senior Care Cleaning Co., we believe every senior deserves to enjoy those moments in a clean, safe, and comfortable home.

While we take care of the cleaning, they can spend more time enjoying what matters most.

Because a clean home isn't just about appearances.

It's about comfort.

It's about independence.

It's about feeling at home.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE YOUR PARENT'S HOUSE THIS WEEKEND... CHECK THESE 10 THINGS.

Would you notice these little changes?

When we visit a loved one's home, it's easy to focus on spending time together.

But sometimes it's the little things that quietly tell a bigger story...

✔️ Is there fresh food in the fridge?

✔️ Is mail piling up?

✔️ Are burnt-out light bulbs making it harder to see?

✔️ Are there loose rugs or trip hazards?

✔️ Are medications organized and up to date?

✔️ Is the bathroom set up safely?

✔️ Is the home clean, comfortable and easy to move around in?

✔️ Are everyday tasks starting to feel overwhelming?

✔️ Is your loved one still living safely and independently?

✔️ Could a little extra support make a big difference?

None of these things automatically mean someone can't live independently.

But together, they can be gentle signs that a little extra support may help someone stay safe, comfortable, and confident in the home they love.

At Senior Care Cleaning Co., we believe caring for seniors is about so much more than cleaning.

It's about creating peace of mind for seniors and the families who love them.

Not all dementia diagnoses look the same.

Dementia is an umbrella term for changes in memory, thinking, communication, behaviour or daily functioning. The specific diagnosis depends on what is causing those changes in the brain.

Here is a high-level guide to several common types:

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
The most common cause of dementia. It often begins with difficulty remembering recent information and gradually affects thinking, communication and everyday tasks.

VASCULAR DEMENTIA
Caused by reduced or interrupted blood flow to the brain, sometimes following a stroke or multiple small strokes. Early changes may involve planning, concentration, processing speed or judgment.

LEWY BODY DEMENTIA
May cause fluctuating alertness, visual hallucinations, sleep disturbances and movement symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease, along with changes in thinking.

FRONTOTEMPORAL DEMENTIA
Primarily affects the frontal and temporal areas of the brain. Early signs may involve personality, behaviour, judgment or language rather than memory. It is more likely than some other forms to occur before age 65.

MIXED DEMENTIA
This means more than one type of brain change is present. A common example is Alzheimer’s disease occurring together with vascular dementia.

PARKINSON’S DISEASE DEMENTIA
Some people living with Parkinson’s disease later develop significant changes in thinking, memory, attention or judgment.

YOUNG-ONSET DEMENTIA
This is not one specific type. It describes any dementia diagnosed before age 65 and may be caused by Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia or another condition.

Each person’s experience is different, and symptoms can overlap. A proper diagnosis may involve medical history, cognitive testing, bloodwork, medication review and brain imaging.

Dementia is not a normal part of aging. When changes begin affecting everyday life, speak with a qualified healthcare professional.

Dementia does not always begin with obvious memory loss. Would your family recognize these quieter warning signs?

Here are 5 early changes families may not know to watch for:

1. Difficulty completing familiar tasks
Someone may suddenly struggle with recipes, banking, household routines, technology or driving routes they have used for years.

2. Changes in language or conversation
They may lose their train of thought, repeat themselves, use unusual words or have increasing difficulty finding familiar words.

3. Poorer judgment or decision-making
Watch for unexplained spending, missed bills, unsafe choices, vulnerability to scams or decisions that seem very unlike them.

4. Changes in mood, motivation or personality
Withdrawal, anxiety, irritability, loss of interest, impulsive behaviour or reduced empathy can sometimes appear before significant memory problems.

5. Problems with concentration or visual-spatial awareness
They may have difficulty following steps, judging distances, reading, recognizing objects or navigating familiar places.

One isolated mistake does not mean someone has dementia. The concern is a noticeable pattern of changes that begins affecting everyday life.

Many treatable conditions, including medication effects, depression, thyroid problems, sleep disorders, infections and vitamin deficiencies, can cause similar symptoms. A medical assessment is important rather than trying to diagnose the cause at home.

Save this post and share it with a family supporting an aging loved one. Early attention can help families find answers, support and appropriate care sooner.

A little humour from the owners behind Senior Care Cleaning Co. 😊

We may not actually clean with feather dusters and old-fashioned brooms, but one thing is true:

We don’t cut corners, we clean them.

We believe a professional service can still feel warm, personal and human. Every home is treated with care, respect and attention to the details that matter.

Compassionate care. Clean spaces. Peace of mind.
