Pic 2: A colour corrective ‘strip wash’ to remove some of the dye bleed. Given the condition of the rug and how long the dyes were able to sit and set, there was only so much we could remove.

We removed this 90% of this coffee stain from this wool rug and added a semi-permanent pigment to correct the rest!

Sometimes wool rugs can have colour run, and when they run, they can bleed. This can happen in any form of wet cleaning, but when it does, most of the time the bleeding can be corrected by a technique called strip washing. Where the rug is quickly and carefully saturated in a product to remove loose dyes, then quickly rinsed and extracted.

Here is a rug that had some bleeding that we corrected through a strip wash:

Although we can wash most rugs, some rugs should not be washed due to the way they are constructed.. this custom made Berber carpet rug, was ‘binded’ to create a rug..

the backing of this rug was mesh and latex glue, but it had urine contamination. Usually, we would fully wash away the urine but in this case, we had to use a technique called “the water claw” to isolate and flush out the urine without causing the latex to prematurely deteriorate. We then followed up with a very thorough extraction, going over 2-3 times with a 7 jetted extraction wand.

Here we forced hot air into this designer hand-tufted jute rug to prevent a phenomenon known as “cellulosic browning” - when plant based fibers turn brown from improper drying.

Browning is reversible but very time consuming.

Here’s a small demonstration of how much more thorough rug washing is versus steam cleaning…

This video was taken, after I’d already done thorough dry soil removal, shampooing, scrubbing, pressure washing, & high volume water squeegeeing.

To top it off I rinse all the remaining soil, suds, etc. Through the rug…

At the end you can see how clear the water is; nearly perfectly clear versus the brown water coming out while on the wash floor.

This was a pretty big challenge, ~10.5 ft c ~14.5 ft, tufted, massively damaged condition oriental rug approximately 40-50 years old, with severe urine contamination.

Final look after drying and grooming.

Total time: 7 hr wash, full day drying, 1 hour grooming
