Some friendly “Do’s & Do Not’s” with regards to your septic systems, Residential or Commercial septic, the same applies.
(List created by our friends from Kingfish Pumping located in the Carleton Place area)
A few key do’s & don'ts to keep in mind in order to ensure your septic system stays healthy and in good working order.
- DO familiarize yourself with the location of your system
- DO NOT drive or park on your septic tank or weeping bed or plant shrubs or trees near or on the tank or bed
- DO have your well tested regularly, and at different times of the year
- If you have an effluent filter, DO clean it at least once a year, although spring and fall would be best. If you don't have one, consider adding one.
- DO NOT do all your laundry in one day and space out the use of dishwashers, showers and washing machines so the weeping bed has time to absorb the water
- DO conserve water to minimize the amount of wastewater generated by repairing leaky plumbing fixtures, taking shorter showers or installing water-saving fixtures, and using the eco options on dishwashers and washing machines.
- DO NOT pour oil, grease, food waste, hazardous chemicals or paint down your drains and
- DO NOT **this one we cannot stress enough** DO NOT flush sanitary pads, tampons, condoms cigarette butts, wet wipes (even the "flushable" ones) down your toilet. The general rule is that if it doesn’t pass through you, it doesn’t go down that toilet, the obvious exception is a maximum 2ply toilet paper
- DO have your septic tank emptied regularly by a licensed pumping company
- DO NOT fall into the belief that a septic tank never needs pumping, the $300.00 to $400.00 it costs every 3-4yrs on average is much easier to deal with than an average $30,000 full system replacement. Septic tanks most certainly DO require regular pumping intervals as a preventative maintenance requirement.
