Great Work

The 3rd annual Community Builders Awards celebrate the extraordinary individuals and organizations making significant contributions to our city.
Youth Haven is honoured to receive this year’s Community Builders Award for Health Care, sponsored by the Stride Clinic.
The award goes to an individual or group that has had an important impact on the health care of the community.

In Simcoe County, youth experiencing homelessness or at risk of it find essential support in the local non-profit Youth Haven.
As the only emergency shelter focused on this population, Youth Haven is crucial in addressing the growing crisis of youth homelessness, which accounts for an estimated 20 per cent of homeless individuals across Canada.
Executive director Lucy Gowers was humbled by news of the win.
"I was very surprised and deeply honoured. To be nominated for such an award is truly humbling. It’s a reminder that the work of our dedicated team at Youth Haven is making a meaningful difference in the lives of the youth we serve."
For many young people who seek help, the streets often feel safer than their homes, highlighting the urgent need for a safe, supportive environment.
“Some of our greatest moments come from seeing the success of the young people we serve,” explained Gowers. “Whether it’s finding housing, securing employment or continuing their education, their achievements remind us that our work is about creating lasting opportunities for change.”
Youth Haven serves over 400 youth each year, providing not just shelter but also emotional and practical support.
“The youth who seek our help inspire me every day,” remarked Gowers. “They face immense challenges but with our support, they show remarkable resilience and take steps toward transforming their futures. Their strength and determination motivate me to do this work.”
From hot meals and safe sleeping arrangements to educational resources and job training, Youth Haven helps residents transition from crisis to stability.
"We are building a new purpose-built shelter that will provide the resources and support needed to help youth transition to independent living,” explained Gowers. “This facility will connect them to housing, education and employment opportunities. This is just the beginning and we are committed to giving our best to the youth we serve."
A key initiative, the New Haven for Youth Haven campaign, aims to raise $2 million for a new facility nearly doubling their capacity to house 31 more youth.
This project, in partnership with the Simcoe County Home Builders Association, not only increases safe housing but also offers valuable skills training in the trades.
Youth Haven exemplifies community building in health care, showing that with the right support, it’s possible to break the cycle of homelessness.
"I’m incredibly grateful to the person who nominated us,” shared Gowers. “This award is a reflection of the hard work of our entire team and the community that supports us. Thank you for believing in our mission and for your ongoing support."
Their unwavering commitment, innovative programs and community engagement remind us all of the power of compassion in building a brighter future.

Toilet bowl brush or swab? We use swabs at Team Chore Busters. We find you can use smaller amounts of cleaner and it fits great under the rims. You would be surprised at how many different types of toilets are out there. All different shapes. The swab has been our answer. The swab is easily cleaned and dried and it stores nicely under my bathroom sink.

What do you use in your house? What do you think of the toilet brush holder in your bathroom? I wash the brush holders in our clients homes as it drives me nuts to think what is sitting in there. The swab is not perfect but it has its benefits. 1 - we put a small amount of toilet bowl cleaner on the swab and start from the rim down. The soft fibres move the toilet bowl cleaner, peroxide or dish soap (yes dish soap) under the rim without splashing chemicals and water everywhere. 2 - I do not store the one in my house in a holder. I spray it with Betco Green Earth Peroxide immediately after use and let it sit under the toilet seat for about 5-10 minutes so the peroxide kills the germs. Then I wring it dry and store it under my bathroom sink. Remember to teach your family to put your toilet seat down before you flush so you do not spread the fine mist around your bathroom. LOL I only remember to do it 50% of the time.

Today at our Innisfil Rotary meeting we had a lovely young lady speak. Leah helped start an organization called Fresh Food Weekly www.FreshFoodWeekly.com that delivers free locally sourced & fresh food to low-income families. You can sponsor a family for $45.00. This team of wonderful volunteers have done so much to help their community and they buy their food locally which supports local businesses. They plan to start serving Innisfil in the New Year and lots of our local farms already support this program. My hat goes to the suppliers that help this organization. Please visit the suppliers page and support as many of these businesses as you can. Local pride

Fresh Food Weekly is a community outreach program in Barrie, Ontario. This program is currently only available to residences of 380 Duckworth Street, Barrie, ON, Canada. This program delivers fresh fruits & vegetables every Monday right to their doorstep.
