The Home and Cottage Show is behind us, and as we head into the first week of June, our trucks are back on the roads, settling into our regular summer maintenance routines.

Taking a weekend to step away from the job sites and stand on the show floor was exactly what our team needed. When you spend months working in relative isolation—pressurizing systems, clearing winter debris, and dealing with the mechanical realities of empty properties—it is easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. You become entirely focused on the task lists, the deadlines, and the logistics.

But this weekend changed that. My attitude of gratitude today is for the faces behind the property files.

Standing at our booth, we had the chance to catch up with clients who have been with us since 2017, back when Kacaba Cottage Care was just a dream and a single truck. We met new families who just closed on their first piece of the Highlands, full of excitement and a little bit of nerves about the realities of cottage ownership. We shook hands, shared stories, and listened to what these properties mean to the people who own them.

It was a powerful reminder that we aren't just maintaining structures or managing schedules. We are protecting the backdrops of your family traditions. Hearing a client look us in the eye and say, "Thank you for giving us our weekends back," makes every long, exhausting day in the May mud entirely worth it.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, grabbed a card, or just stood to chat with us. We are incredibly proud to be a part of this community, and we are ready for the beautiful season ahead.

: The Yellow Haze 🌲🟡

If your Haliburton Highlands cottage deck is currently covered in a thick layer of neon dust, you know pine pollen season has officially arrived. While your first instinct for spring deck maintenance is to grab the garden hose and spray it all away, you might actually be making your job ten times harder.

The Expert Tip: Blow Before You Wash. Pine pollen is incredibly fine, and when it meets water, it transforms from a dry powder into a stubborn, sticky yellow paste that clings to wood grain, composite boards, and glass.

The Task: Use a leaf blower or a stiff broom to remove the dry dust first while it’s still airborne. Once the bulk of the pollen is gone, you can wash the surface with water. You’ll save yourself hours of scrubbing and prevent those unsightly yellow streaks on your siding and windows! 🌬️✨

"Can you set up my patio furniture?" 🪑 Yes! As part of a seasonal opening package, we can haul the Muskoka chairs out of the shed, wipe them down, and set them up on the dock. You just bring the drinks.

: The Deep Diver 🫎🌊

It’s a common sight to see a Moose standing knee-deep in a Haliburton Highlands marsh, but did you know they are world-class freedivers? A Moose can dive up to 20 feet underwater and hold its breath for nearly a minute to feast on sodium-rich aquatic plants at the bottom of the lake. 🤿🌿

The Maintenance Tie-In: If a 1,000lb Moose can easily reach those depths, your water intake line needs to be positioned even deeper! Shallow intake lines are the first to freeze in the winter and the most likely to get snagged by boat props or disturbed by wandering wildlife in the spring. During our property maintenance checks, we inspect your intake line depth and foot valves to ensure you have consistent, sediment-free water flow all summer long. 🏠💧

The dust is barely settling from the Victoria Day long weekend rush, and our trucks are still out there keeping up with the post-opening momentum. But as we transition out of the absolute peak operational sprint of May, our focus is shifting toward something a bit more social. This coming weekend is the Home and Cottage Show.

If you’ve spent any time building a business in a tight-knit area like the Highlands, you know that events like this are milestones. Years ago, walking through a cottage show meant looking for inspiration, gathering ideas, and dreaming about what this business could eventually become.

This week, my attitude of gratitude is focused entirely on the community that allowed us to step out of the crowd and onto the floor.

Preparing our booth for the show forces us to look back at our roots. It reminds us of the first handful of clients who trusted us with their keys when we were just getting started. Now, being able to stand there as an established part of the Haliburton business community is a privilege we don't take lightly.

In a world where so much of our work happens through emails, text updates, and digital scheduling sheets, the real blessing of this upcoming weekend is the chance to connect face-to-face. We get to shake hands with the clients we’ve looked after for years, meet the new owners who are just starting their Highlands journey, and catch up with our local peers in the industry.

We are deep in the logistics of getting everything ready for the weekend, and though the days are long, it’s a wonderful kind of busy. If you are planning to head out to the show, please stop by our booth and say hello. We’d love to catch up.

: The Window Well Aquarium 🐟🪟

Late May brings heavy spring thunderstorms to the Haliburton Highlands, making basement window maintenance a top priority for cottage owners. Are your window wells ready for the deluge, or are you accidentally building an aquarium against your foundation?

The Hidden Risk: Over the fall and winter, basement window wells act like traps for dead leaves, pine needles, and debris. This muck creates a waterproof seal over the drainage gravel at the bottom. When the heavy May rains hit, the water has nowhere to go—the well fills up until the pressure breaches the window seals and pours directly into your finished basement.

The Task: The Muck Out. Grab a pair of thick gloves and a bucket. Dig all the rotting leaves and dirt out of every window well until you expose the clean drainage gravel at the bottom.

A 5-minute scoop-out today prevents a $10,000 basement flood tonight! 🌊🛠️
