Boil water advisory lifted

Public Health Sudbury & Districts has officially lifted the boil water advisory that came into effect May 6, 2026, for residents of New Sudbury, Sudbury, parts of Garson, and Falconbridge.

“We recognize this situation was difficult and disruptive for residents, businesses, schools, and community organizations. We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation and understanding,” said Dr. Emily Groot, Associate Medical Officer of Health for Public Health Sudbury & Districts. “While challenging, this situation also demonstrates that the routine monitoring and response systems worked as intended. Potential concerns were identified early, and a boil water advisory was issued to protect approximately 90 000 residents.”

Public Health issued the boil water advisory as a precaution after routine drinking water monitoring detected coliform bacteria in samples, indicating that the drinking water supply may have been vulnerable to contamination. This early detection through ongoing surveillance is a key function of public health monitoring systems designed to identify potential risks before they result in illness. Although the underlying cause of the initial adverse water results has not yet been identified, two consecutive sets of water samples have since returned with no adverse results, indicating that the water supply is now safe and that the water treatment and distribution systems are operating properly.

As part of the investigation, and out of an abundance of caution, Public Health required additional water samples to be submitted to Public Health Ontario laboratories, with results expected tomorrow, Saturday, May 9. Based on the results received to date, Public Health does not anticipate any issues. If there are any unexpected findings, the public will be notified promptly.

Public Health and the City of Greater Sudbury continue to review the circumstances that led to the advisory. At this time, there is no evidence of ongoing concerns in the drinking water system. Boil water advisories are issued whenever there is a potential risk to public health, even while investigations are ongoing. This event reinforces the importance of sustained public health monitoring and response systems as a critical safeguard for safe drinking water and community health.

After a boil water advisory is lifted, residents should:
- Run cold water faucets for 5 minutes or until the water runs clear.
- Large-volume users (for example, schools) may need to run cold water taps longer on first use.
- Run water softeners through a regeneration cycle.
- Drain and refill hot water heaters set below 45°C.
- Discard water filters that were used during the advisory and replace with new filters, cartridges, and reverse osmosis membranes.
- Discard the first 3 batches of ice produced in built-in refrigerator ice making machines.

In addition, food premises operators must:
- Flush water lines: Turn on all faucets and water-using equipment (including hoses) and let them run for at least 5 minutes.
- Clean equipment: Flush and sanitize all water-connected equipment including:
- Ice machines. Empty the ice machine, and clean and sanitize the bin and all lines. Discard the first 3 batches of ice produced.
- Beverage dispensers. Run soda fountains, coffee machines, and water dispensers with hot water for 5 minutes. Operators are encouraged to contact their suppliers for guidance.
- Run empty machines through at least one full cycle to ensure sanitization before resuming normal use.
- Clean and sanitize all food contact surfaces.

As we now shift efforts to clearing laneways and cul-de-sacs, and widening roads, parked vehicles on roads, in laneways, or too close to driveway ends can significantly delay this work. A 24/7 parking ban is now in effect on all municipal roads (excluding paid on-street parking) until the Significant Weather Event is lifted.

Vehicles that are impeding snow removal may be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. Bylaw Enforcement Officers will make reasonable efforts to contact vehicle owners before taking enforcement action.

Additionally, crews may also temporarily close sections of residential roads to speed up snow clearing and removal.
***

Extreme Winter Weather Conditions

The City of Greater Sudbury and surrounding areas are currently experiencing severe winter weather. CGS has declared a Significant Weather Event and has deployed all available resources to respond to the storm, however, it may take longer than usual to maintain local roadways.

Due to extreme conditions, major roadways including Municipal Road 80, Municipal Road 35, and Municipal Road 55 as well as all side streets may not be maintained at this time except for emergency service needs.

We are asking all residents to remain at home and stay off the roadways until further notice.

Municipal crews continue to work diligently to reduce the impact of this weather event on our community.

Please remember that 9-1-1 is for emergencies only. It should not be used to request information about weather or road conditions. For municipal service inquiries, please call 3-1-1. For provincial service inquiries, please call 2-1-1.

🌨️ Weather Update for Sudbury ❄️

Freezing rain and ice pellets continue across the city this afternoon, creating very slick roads and sidewalks. Conditions will stay messy until the system shifts to snow later today and gradually tapers off tonight.

While precipitation has eased at times, another wave is moving through, bringing a mix of freezing rain, ice pellets, and snow. Expect visibility to fluctuate, especially as winds increase later on. 💨

If you’re out today:
🐢 Take it slow - surfaces are extremely icy
🚗 Leave extra stopping distance
💡 Use headlights in low visibility
🚶‍♂️ Be careful on walkways, steps, and parking lots

❗️Please continue to monitor Environment Canada for updates as conditions change.

Stay safe out there, Sudbury. ❄️💙
