Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know that pharaoh ants often show up indoors when outdoor conditions don’t meet their needs? Their nests can be right under a home or building. Because the nest is warmed by the building, it can keep the colony active year-round or “wake them up” earlier than you’d expect.

Their natural food sources outside aren’t available until usually late spring, which is why they move indoors to find food. They’re not just drawn to “messy” spaces. Even the cleanest homes can attract them, because they’re after tiny crumbs, moisture, or even microscopic food residue you wouldn’t notice.

What makes them tricky is their ability to split into multiple colonies if disturbed. This process is called budding which can actually make an infestation spread faster if not handled properly.

So if you’re suddenly seeing more of them, it’s not about cleanliness, it’s about opportunity.

🐜 Fun Fact Friday!

Carpenter ants don’t actually eat wood! Instead, they tunnel through it to create smooth, hollow galleries for their colony, almost like natural woodworking.

As they chew, they push out little piles of sawdust-like material (called “frass”), though it’s not always visible, since it’s often hidden inside walls or ceilings.

They prefer wood that’s already softened or damaged by moisture as it’s easier for them to create their tunnels. They usually highlight a preexisting problem more than they cause it.

🦟 Fun Fact Friday

Did you know that all ant species produce winged ants during their reproductive season? It’s part of their life cycle.

These winged ants (called swarmers) are the reproductive members of the colony. They leave the nest to mate. Then the fertilized queens drop their wings and start new colonies, while the males die shortly after.

Which means “ants with wings” alone isn’t enough to identify a species.

Introducing our new series: Pest of the month!

Each month we’ll highlight a pest that is prevalent at that time of year in our area. We believe that when you understand what’s going on, pest issues feel less daunting and a lot easier to solve with the right help.

🐞 Bug of the Month: Box Elder Bugs

Have you noticed clusters of black and red bugs hanging out on sunny walls or around your windows? Those are box elder bugs, a very common, seasonal pest in our area.

What are they?
Box elder bugs are outdoor insects that feed on box elder trees (also known as Manitoba Maple trees). They’re especially noticeable in early spring and fall when they gather in large numbers.

Why are they in and on the outside of my house?
They're not trying to move in permanently and they don't breed or feed in our homes. They are initially attracted to the warmth on the sunny sides of our homes in the fall. They then sneak into the small gaps and cracks, under siding etc, to escape the cold or sudden weather swings. Inside you will usually find them around your windows as they are attracted to the light and are trying to get back outside.

Are they dangerous?
No, they don’t bite, sting, or cause structural damage. They’re more of a nuisance than a threat.

If you’re having a problem with box elder bugs we can help.
