I got a call the other day from a home owner about effluent coming out of the top of his septic tank riser lid. He asked if I pumped out systems? and I said I do not but I would be happy to come and look before he spends a bunch of money on a pump out service. I got to the property and as the home owner had mentioned there was effluent coming out of the septic tank lid. This was the second tank in series and a pump chamber in front of this tank. I looked at the pump chamber and it was at normal operating level and the pump was working as it should. I have a small sump pump that has a filter screen on it and started pumping some of the effluent out of this backed up septic tank into the pump chamber. I asked the owner if there was another access lid? and he said not that he was aware of. I got looking around and sure enough there was a hollow sound just below the surface when I thumped on the ground with my boot. We got a shovel and sure enough there was another access lid that he did not know was there. This lid, buried 6" below grade by the installer in 2006, was the access lid to the effluent filter installed in the outlet baffle of this septic tank that the home owner was unaware of. We removed the lid and I probed around and sure enough there was the effluent filter. I put on my trusty garbage bag up to my armpit and and asked the owner to help by holding a butterfly net over the end of the pipe in the pump chamber so that when I pull the filter up a little, a bunch of solids would not go into the pump chamber. I reached into the tank and pulled the filter up just a little and effluent started flowing into the pump chamber. The level in the septic tank eventually got to normal operating level and I pulled the effluent filter all the way out and cleaned it off into the septic tank with a garden hose. This had been an ongoing issue and the home owner had this tank pumped out several times before. The last time the pumper service told him it was a frozen pipe and jetted the pipe from the pump chamber(approximately 5') into the baffle that houses this effluent filter and declaring the blockage removed charged the home owner $600 for there service.
So if you are having an issue with your septic system give us a call before you call a pumper. It could just be a simple problem, heck you might even learn something about your septic system. I added some pictures for visual effect. These are not pictures from this job as my hands were covered in you know what but you get the idea.
