What is Hoarding Disorder?

Hoarding Disorder is a mental health condition where a person has persistent difficulty letting go of possessions, regardless of their actual value.

👉 In simple terms:
It’s when throwing things away feels emotionally overwhelming, even if the item isn’t useful.
Key Features

✔ Strong urge to save items
✔ Distress or anxiety when discarding
✔ Accumulation of clutter that affects living spaces
✔ Difficulty organizing or making decisions about belongings
What’s Really Happening Psychologically?

It’s not about laziness or being disorganized.

People with hoarding tendencies often think:

“I might need this someday.”
“This is important—I can’t lose it.”
“Throwing this away feels wrong.”

👉 The brain treats letting go as a risk, not a simple decision.
Examples
▫️Keeping old clothes you never wear “just in case”
▫️Saving broken items because they might be fixed someday
▫️Holding onto gifts, letters, or objects because they feel tied to memories
When Does It Become a Disorder?

It becomes Hoarding Disorder when:

✔ Clutter makes spaces hard to use (bed, kitchen, workspace)
✔ It affects daily life (sleep, work, relationships)
✔ It causes emotional distress or conflict with others
Possible Causes

Hoarding is often linked to:

▪️Emotional attachment to objects
▪️Fear of loss or regret
▪️Difficulty making decisions
▪️Past experiences (e.g., scarcity, trauma)
Can It Be Managed?

Yes. Change is possible—but it starts small.

✔ Let go of one item at a time
✔ Focus on progress, not perfection
✔ Understand your emotional attachment
✔ Seek support if it feels overwhelming
✨✨Hoarding isn’t about being messy.
It’s about holding onto something that feels important, even when it hurts you.

And the first step isn’t throwing things away.
It’s understanding why it’s hard to let go.✨✨

Hi everyone, I want to start by saying thank you for all your support on my journey from professional organizer to Neurodiversity Focused Organizer & Executive Function Coach!

I'm so excited to finally share the result of this journey! My designer has gone through a wonderful process to unify our online presence, and this new look reflects my dedicated focus on supporting neurodiverse individuals. While the brand has a new feel, I am still the same supportive person you've always known.

With appreciation,
Jane Gobin

The brain thrives on small predictions. Each time we plan, try something, evaluate what worked (and what didn’t), and then adjust, we reinforce the executive function skills that help us move toward long-term change.

In this month’s blog, I explain how planners help the brain build these habits by acting as a prediction tool.
