I said what I said. 😂

There are some things in business I just can’t fu***ng understand.

Brush washing an entire house.

Calling every green stain “mold.”

Dropping your price the second a customer tells you to “sharpen your pencil.”

Doing free extras because you’re too scared to tell the customer, “Yeah, we can do that — here’s what it costs.”

And my personal favourite…

Taking business advice from someone whose business you wouldn’t buy for $500. 💀

Jokes aside, know your craft, know your numbers, charge for your value, and be VERY careful who you take advice from.

You don’t need to know everything to run a successful exterior cleaning business — but you should probably stop doing dumb s**t just because everyone else does it.

Which one did I miss? 👇

One of the best parts about coaching is watching someone actually DO THE S**T WE TALKED ABOUT. 🔥

Not just take notes.
Not just nod their head on a Zoom call.
Not just say, “Yeah, that’s a good idea.”

They fu***ng execute.

And one of the easiest things I keep pushing home service business owners to do costs ZERO DOLLARS:

Get your face online.

Talk about what you do.
Show people what you do.
Explain the problems you solve.
Teach them something.
Tell them what services are coming up BEFORE they need them.

Stop waiting until gutter cleaning season to start talking about gutter cleaning.

Stop waiting until everyone wants their house washed to remind them you wash houses.

Market ahead of the demand. Stack the calendar before the season gets here.

Your customers should already know your face, your company and what you can do for them when they’re ready to buy.

And if you try something and it doesn’t fu***ng work?

Good.

Try something else.

There are a thousand things you can test, but none of them work if you don’t actually DO SOMETHING.

Get online. Hit record. Talk to your customers.

Massive action beats another fu***ng idea sitting in your head.

When you own a business, “nothing” can actually be pretty damn important.

Running an exterior cleaning business means your brain is constantly ON.

Quotes. Customers. Employees. Equipment. Chemicals. Scheduling. Weather. Marketing. Payroll. The phone ringing. The texts coming in. And the 47 little problems nobody else even knows about. 😂

So when someone asks what I’m doing later and I say nothing…

I don’t mean I’m available.

I mean I’m doing NOTHING.

No pressure washer running.
No phone calls.
No problems to solve.
No decisions to make.

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do as a business owner is shut it all down for a few hours and give your brain a chance to catch the f**k up.

You don’t have to fill every empty spot on the calendar.

Sometimes nothing is the plan.

Sometimes the fastest way to grow your business isn’t adding another habit, another system, another app, or another strategy.

It’s getting rid of the s**t that keeps setting you back.

Maybe it’s procrastination.
Maybe it’s avoiding the numbers.
Maybe it’s saying yes to every customer.
Maybe it’s constantly starting new things without finishing the old ones.

You can keep pouring more into your business, but if there’s a massive leak somewhere, you’re just working harder to stay in the same place.

Find the leak. Fix it. Then start filling the tank.

Simple enough.

Isn’t that right, Bruce? 🐈‍⬛

🔥 GET RID OF YOUR S**TTY CUSTOMERS.

Not every customer is a good customer.

Some customers take 5x the time, 5x the energy and create 10x the stress — while usually being the least profitable ones you have.

Everything is last minute.
Everything is an emergency.
Everything is chaotic.
And there’s always a little…

“Hey, while you’re here, can you just do this too?”

Sure.

It’ll cost this much more.

Your customers are relationships, and just like every other relationship in your life, you need boundaries.

If something isn’t in the scope of work, it’s additional work.

If YOU decide to throw something in because you’re ahead of schedule or want to go above and beyond, awesome.

But that’s your choice — not an expectation.

And here’s the bigger point:

When you stop tolerating s**tty customers, you create room for better ones.

Good customers respect your time.
They respect your pricing.
They respect your process.
They refer people like themselves.

Eventually, your customer base starts becoming a reflection of the standards you’re willing to enforce.

You don’t need every customer.

You need the RIGHT customers.

BIG HAPPY FEELINGS.

You know that feeling when you score the winning goal, crush the perfect hit, or finally win something you’ve been grinding for?

Business has those moments too — except sometimes they’re not nearly as exciting from the outside.

Finally getting that pile of paperwork done.

Sending the quotes you’ve been putting off.

Following up with those commercial leads.

Getting your invoices caught up.

Cleaning out the truck.

Fixing that piece of equipment that’s been pi***ng you off for three weeks.

Getting your schedule organized.

Making the phone call.

Doing the s**t you KNOW needs to get done.

None of those things seem like a huge win by themselves. But when you own a pressure washing or soft washing business, stacking those little wins creates momentum.

And momentum feels fu***ng good.

Sometimes the best feeling in business isn’t landing the $10,000 job.

It’s getting to the end of the day knowing you handled your s**t, moved the business forward, and did exactly what you said you were going to do.

Those are the BIG HAPPY FEELINGS. 😂

What did you get done this week that gave you that feeling?

If you’re the boss, manager, or business owner, you already know the deal:

Everybody wants to throw their problems into your fu***ng court.

Employee has a question? You get a text.
Something broke? You get a call.
Someone needs supplies? Another text.
Something funny happened? Somehow you need to hear about that too. 😂

Eventually your phone becomes the communication system for the entire company.

That’s a terrible fu***ng system.

One of the simplest things I ever did in my home service business was use Slack.

And for what we needed? FREE.

We created channels for different parts of the business.

Equipment problems → equipment channel.
Supplies needed → supplies channel.
Scheduling issues → scheduling channel.
Funny s**t → its own channel.

Instead of everything coming directly to me, the problem went where the problem belonged.

That’s the real lesson here.

As the owner, your job isn’t to personally catch every ball people throw at you. Your job is to build systems that tell people where to throw the ball.

And whenever you notice the same question, interruption, or problem repeatedly coming to you?

Build a fu***ng channel for it.

Slack’s free plan has limitations, including message history eventually disappearing, so use it for the low-level operational stuff you don’t need permanently archived. Keep important records where they belong.

Organize your communication.
Organize your problems.
Protect your time.

Because the goal isn’t to become better at handling chaos.

The goal is to build a business that creates less of it.

July, August and early September can be BRUTAL for exterior cleaning companies.

Especially here on the West Coast 🇨🇦.

Spring is over. Homeowners are travelling. Patios are already cleaned. September hits and families are dealing with back-to-school, sports schedules and getting back into routine.

So how the hell do you stay busy?

You don’t wait until August to figure it out.

1. Move work into your slow months.
When you’re slammed in the spring, offer customers an incentive to push non-urgent work into July or August. Maybe you sacrifice a little margin, but keeping the schedule moving can be worth far more than sitting at home with an empty calendar.

2. Sell recurring service.
Stop thinking about every customer as a one-time job. Whenever it makes sense, offer a maintenance plan or recurring contract. Give them a better rate in exchange for committing to regular service throughout the year.

Exterior cleaning companies are starting to look a lot more like other home-service businesses: multiple services, scheduled throughout the year, sometimes packaged into one predictable monthly payment.

That recurring revenue can completely change your slow season.

3. BUILD YOUR CUSTOMER LIST.

This is where established companies have a massive advantage.

If you’ve got 2,000 previous customers, you don’t need all 2,000 to say yes. Email them. Text them. Call them. Remind them what you offer.

Maybe 1,950 aren’t interested right now.

Who gives a s**t?

You only need enough YESes to fill the calendar.

A few recurring contracts + a few jobs intentionally pushed into summer + your normal incoming leads + reactivating old customers = a much healthier July and August.

The biggest mistake is waiting until you’re slow to start worrying about being slow.

Your slow-season strategy starts when you’re busy.

Save this one and start planning next summer before next summer gets here.

Everyone thinks exterior cleaning companies must be absolutely SLAMMED in August.

But for a lot of us… August can actually be one of the slower months of the year.

And when you think about it, it makes sense.

A lot of homeowners, stratas and commercial properties that have the budget for professional exterior cleaning already planned for it. They got their washing, gutters, roofs and property cleanup done in the spring.

By August, they’re enjoying the property — not looking to have crews, hoses and equipment running around it.

So the goal isn’t to complain that August is slow.

The goal is to PLAN for August being slow.

When you’re slammed in the spring and someone is hesitant because of price, try offering them 5–10% off if they’re willing to schedule for August.

On a $10K, $20K or $30K strata/commercial project, that discount can mean serious savings for the customer — while helping you fill a part of your calendar that might otherwise be empty.

And remember: exterior cleaning is seasonal.

Spring cleanup comes first, but FALL CLEANUP is coming.

Gutters. Roof cleaning. Moss treatment. Property cleanup. Winter preparation.

Roof cleaning was actually one of my busiest services in the fall.

So if you’re slow right now, don’t sit around waiting for the phone to ring. Start marketing NOW for the next wave of work.

And if your market gets really slow in the winter, diversify. Snow removal, Christmas lights, sealing, maintenance or whatever makes sense in your area.

You can’t eliminate seasonality — but you can build your business around it.

👇 Exterior cleaning owners: what do you offer during your slower months to keep the trucks moving?
