COMPROMISED ROOF SOFFIT… OR A BIRD CEMETERY? 🐦

What started as a routine bird exclusion job at a Calgary home turned into something we honestly didn’t expect.

Once we opened the soffit, we discovered 13 dead birds trapped inside.

But thankfully, the story didn’t end there.

We also found 4 live birds that were still trapped inside the soffit — and we were able to safely rescue them. ❤️

This is why bird problems around your roof shouldn’t simply be ignored.

A small opening in a soffit can become an entry point where birds build nests, become trapped, damage insulation, create droppings and debris, and potentially cause ongoing problems for the home.

At Evicta Pest Control, our goal isn't just to remove the problem.

We find how they're getting in.
We safely remove or rescue what we can.
Then we properly secure the entry point to help prevent them from coming back.

This Calgary home wasn't just dealing with a compromised soffit…

It was hiding a bird cemetery.

Watch the video to see what we found inside. 👀

🕷️ Seeing More Spiders Inside Your Home Lately? Here’s What’s Actually Happening.

If you’ve noticed more spiders around your home as summer comes to an end, you’re not imagining it.

Late summer and early fall can bring increased spider activity around homes and buildings. As temperatures begin to change, spiders may become more noticeable around basements, garages, windows, corners, sheds and other sheltered areas.

But here’s something many homeowners don’t realize:

🕷️ Seeing spiders can also mean there is an insect food source nearby.

Spiders don’t come into your home because they want to bother you. They follow food. If your property has plenty of flies, moths, ants or other small insects, it can become an attractive hunting ground for spiders.

What can attract spiders around your home?

• Exterior lighting attracting insects
• Gaps around doors and windows
• Cluttered areas and undisturbed corners
• Excessive outdoor vegetation near the building
• Other insects providing a steady food source
• Cracks and openings that allow insects — and spiders — inside

🏠 What can you do?

Start by reducing insects around your home, sealing obvious entry points, removing webs regularly and keeping basements, garages and other storage areas clean and uncluttered.

If you're seeing large numbers of spiders or constant web activity, it may be worth having the property inspected to identify what is attracting them.

🕷️ Seeing spiders is one thing. Finding them everywhere is another.

If spiders are becoming a recurring problem around your Calgary home or business, Evicta Pest Control can help identify the source and provide professional spider control.

🐝 Yellow Jacket vs. Bald-Faced Hornet: Which One Hurts More?

They both have wings. They both can be aggressive. And both can deliver a painful sting.

But Yellow Jackets and Bald-Faced Hornets are not the same insect.

Here’s what Calgary homeowners should know 👇

🟡 YELLOW JACKET

Size: Usually about 10–16 mm long.

Appearance: Bright yellow and black with a relatively smooth, slender body.

Where they nest: Often underground, inside wall voids, under decks, in cracks, or other protected spaces.

Stinging: Yellow Jackets can sting repeatedly because their stinger is not left behind.

Pain: Their sting causes an immediate sharp, burning pain, followed by redness, swelling and tenderness. Multiple stings can produce much more intense symptoms.

⚠️ One important thing: Yellow Jackets can become extremely defensive when their nest is disturbed.

⚪ BALD-FACED HORNET

Size: Larger and more robust, usually around 12–19 mm long.

Appearance: Mostly black with distinctive white/ivory markings on the face and abdomen.

Where they nest: They commonly build large paper nests in trees, shrubs, under eaves, and other elevated locations.

Stinging: Like Yellow Jackets, they can sting repeatedly.

Pain: Their sting can be very painful, with a strong burning sensation, swelling and tenderness.

And because Bald-Faced Hornets aggressively defend their nest, disturbing one can result in multiple hornets attacking at once.

🔥 SO WHICH STING HURTS MORE?

There isn't a reliable scientific rule that says one always hurts more.

Pain varies from person to person and depends on the location and number of stings.

The bigger concern isn't simply the pain — it's multiple stings and allergic reactions.

🚨 Seek emergency medical attention if someone develops:

Difficulty breathing
Swelling of the face, lips or throat
Dizziness or fainting
Widespread hives
Rapidly worsening symptoms
🏠 THE BIGGEST MISTAKE?

Trying to remove an active nest yourself.

A nest that looks small from the outside can contain many defensive workers.

If you see wasps repeatedly entering and leaving the same hole, crack, wall void or nest, don't block the entrance or disturb the nest before it's treated.

🐝 Know the difference. Know the risk. Stay safe.

🐝 Guess What We Found in This Kitchen Cabinet?

This was definitely NOT what the homeowner expected to find in their kitchen. 😳

Behind the cabinet was a large bumble bee nest, with significant bee activity.

Our team carefully removed the nest, bagged it, and safely cleared the affected area so the homeowner could get their kitchen back without disturbing the nest unnecessarily.

👉 The lesson: If you notice bees repeatedly entering or leaving a wall, cabinet, soffit, deck, or other hidden area, don't assume they've simply flown away.

There could be a nest hidden behind the surface.

And the bigger the nest gets, the harder it can be to deal with.

Why Spraying a Cockroach Doesn't Solve the Problem 🪳

You see a cockroach in your kitchen.

You grab the spray.

You kill it.

Problem solved… right? ❌

Not necessarily.

Cockroaches are experts at hiding. The one you see may be only a small part of a much larger infestation hiding behind appliances, inside cabinets, under sinks, around plumbing openings, and in cracks and crevices.

Why random spraying often doesn't solve the problem:

🪳 You may only kill the cockroaches you can see.
Most of the population can remain hidden.

🥚 Egg cases can survive treatment.
New cockroaches may continue emerging after the initial treatment.

🏠 You may miss their harbourage areas.
Cockroaches don't necessarily stay where you spot them.

⚠️ Repellent sprays can sometimes make treatment more difficult.
Instead of eliminating the infestation, you may push cockroaches deeper into inaccessible areas.

🍽️ The source of the infestation may still be there.
Food, moisture, clutter and entry points can continue supporting the population.

Professional cockroach control is about more than killing what you see.

At Evicta Pest Control, we look for where cockroaches are hiding, what is attracting them, how they're getting around the property, and where treatment needs to be strategically placed.

Depending on the situation, treatment may involve inspection, monitoring, targeted gel baiting, crack-and-crevice treatment, sanitation recommendations and follow-up visits.

The goal isn't to kill the cockroach you saw.

The goal is to eliminate the infestation you can't see.

If you've started seeing cockroaches in your home, don't wait for the sightings to become routine.

The Wasp Problem That Looked Like It Had No Source 🐝

Yesterday, I got called to a basement in Calgary because the homeowner was dealing with what seemed like a never-ending wasp problem.

Every morning, she was finding dozens of wasps flying around the basement.

When we arrived, the basement was being used for storage, with plenty of items around. We moved things, checked corners, inspected walls and looked carefully for signs of where the wasps were coming from.

But there was a problem…

Not a single live wasp.

Only dead ones.

The homeowner had been fighting them for days using household aerosol spray. There were dead wasps all over the floor, but the source remained a mystery.

Rather than guess, we rescheduled the inspection for a time when the wasps would be more active.

Then the homeowner called us back.

This time, we found the clue.

The original entry point into the basement had been blocked. Instead of solving the problem, this had forced the wasps to find multiple new ways into the basement.

That explained why there were wasps appearing in different areas.

We followed the activity, identified the new entry points and treated the areas appropriately.

The homeowner was relieved to finally understand what had been happening.

🐝 THE BIG LESSON FOR CALGARY HOMEOWNERS:

Don't simply plug or seal a suspected wasp entry point while an active nest may still be inside.

You could potentially force the wasps to find another route into your home, turning one entry point into several.

If you are seeing wasps inside your Calgary home, especially repeatedly in a basement, don't just keep spraying the ones you see.

The wasps you see may not be the real problem. Finding where they're coming from is.

At Evicta Pest Control, we focus on tracing the activity, locating entry points and treating the source of the problem.

Do Ultrasonic Pest Control Products Really Work?

You’ve probably seen them advertised as an easy solution for mice, rats, insects and other pests:

“Plug it in and pests will stay away.”

But do ultrasonic pest control devices actually work?

The short answer: Not reliably.

Ultrasonic pest repellers produce high-frequency sounds that manufacturers claim will disturb or repel pests. While the idea sounds appealing, there is limited evidence that these devices provide reliable, long-term pest control in real homes.

Why don’t they work as well as advertised?

1. Pests can get used to the sound

Even if an ultrasonic sound initially bothers an animal, pests may become accustomed to it over time.

2. Ultrasound doesn't reach everywhere

High-frequency sound doesn't travel through walls, furniture and other obstacles the way people often assume. A device plugged into one room doesn't necessarily protect the entire house.

3. Pests have a strong reason to stay

If mice have access to food, warmth, water and a safe nesting area, simply making the environment uncomfortable may not be enough to make them leave.

4. It doesn't solve the source of the problem

A device doesn't seal a mouse entry point, remove a nest, eliminate food sources or address an established infestation.

What actually works for mice?

Effective mouse control usually requires a combination of methods:

🔎 Find the entry points
Mice can squeeze through surprisingly small openings.

🛠️ Seal the openings
Proper exclusion is one of the most important parts of long-term mouse control.

🪤 Control the existing population
Traps or professionally managed baiting may be necessary depending on the situation.

🧹 Reduce attractants
Secure food, garbage and other potential food sources.

📍 Monitor activity
Follow-up inspections help determine whether the problem has actually been resolved.

So, should you buy an ultrasonic pest repeller?

If you're dealing with an active pest problem, don't rely on an ultrasonic device as your primary solution.

It may be inexpensive and easy to plug in, but pest control is rarely as simple as plugging something into a wall.

The goal isn't just to make pests uncomfortable.
The goal is to find out WHY they're there and eliminate the conditions allowing them to stay.

CARPENTER ANT vs PAVEMENT ANT 🐜

Not all ants cause the same problems.

🐜 CARPENTER ANTS
They don’t eat wood, but they tunnel through it to build their nests. Moisture-damaged or decaying wood can make a home more attractive to them.

🍬 PAVEMENT ANTS
These tiny ants commonly nest under sidewalks, patios, driveways and foundations. They’re attracted to sweets, grease and other food sources.

How to prevent ants:

✅ Fix moisture problems and leaks
✅ Seal cracks and gaps around your home
✅ Keep food sealed and clean up spills
✅ Keep wood away from soil and in good condition
✅ Remove dead wood and tree stumps near the home

Seeing ants? Don’t just treat the ones you see. Find the source.

“3 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Hornet Nests”

🐝 The nest is only part of the story.
There can be developing larvae inside.
🐝 A quiet-looking nest doesn't necessarily mean it's abandoned.
🐝 Disturbing a nest can trigger defensive behaviour.
If you find one around your home, keep your distance and have it assessed.

🚨 If you see ONE cockroach, there could be hundreds more hiding where you can't see them.

Over 1,000 cockroaches caught in a recent cockroach treatment

Most infestations stay hidden behind cabinets, under appliances, inside wall voids, and around plumbing. By the time you start seeing cockroaches during the day, the infestation has often been growing for weeks or even months.

Cockroaches aren't just unpleasant—they can:
🪳 Contaminate food and food preparation areas
🦠 Spread bacteria and other pathogens
🤧 Trigger allergies and asthma, especially in children

The good news? They can be eliminated with the right treatment plan.

If you've noticed even a few cockroaches in your home or business, don't ignore the signs. The sooner the problem is addressed, the easier it is to bring it under control.
