Are you planning a trip soon?

Between booking flights, organizing accommodations, packing your bags and about 10,000 other tasks to take care of, it's easy to overlook a few things at home.

Have you checked your sump pump? Tested your smoke detectors? Made arrangements for seasonal property maintenance? Reviewed your home insurance requirements?

We have created a comprehensive Departure Checklist to help you prepare your home before your next getaway, covering everything from plumbing and heating to security, appliances and outdoor maintenance.

However long you're leaving for, a little preparation can go a long way in keeping your home in good shape, and having less to worry about while you are away.

You can download the departure checklist and print it to help you prepare for your next trip:

Do you ever wonder what might be happening inside your home while you are away?

A neighbour can certainly keep a watchful eye on your property. But what happens if a toilet develops a slow leak while you are spending three weeks travelling through Europe?

Will your neighbour notice the water slowly damaging your bathroom floor? And if they do, what happens next?

They might call to let you know there is a problem, but can you reasonably expect them to find a qualified professional, coordinate the repairs, and make sure everything is taken care of before you return?

There are a lot of "what ifs" that come with leaving your home unattended, and not every problem is immediately obvious.

That is where Acuity Advantage comes in.

Our professional Home Watch services go beyond simply checking that your doors are locked and everything looks fine. We conduct thorough, scheduled visits designed to identify potential concerns before they become bigger problems.

And when something does go wrong, we can help coordinate the necessary repairs and services on your behalf, so an unexpected issue does not have to sit unresolved until you return.

That's the Acuity Advantage. Learn more about our Home Watch Services here: https://acuityadvantage.com/home-watch-services/

Would you hand a stranger the keys to your home?

Most of us would immediately say no.

Yet every day, homeowners give cleaners, housekeepers, contractors and other service providers access to their properties. Sometimes that means handing over a key. Other times, it means providing an alarm code or allowing someone to enter the home while nobody else is there.

A recent story published by Discover Airdrie is an important reminder of just how much trust is involved.

According to the report, a housekeeper who had previously faced theft-related charges is now facing additional charges following an RCMP investigation into the alleged theft of gold and silver from a Carstairs residence while the homeowners were away.

Police allege that the stolen items were pawned for approximately $87,000.

While these allegations have not been proven in court, the circumstances raise an important question for homeowners everywhere.

How much do you really know about the people you allow into your home?

At Acuity Advantage, we work with homeowners who travel frequently, maintain seasonal residences or simply have busy schedules that make managing every detail of their property difficult.

Our Home Watch services provide scheduled, in-person inspections while homeowners are away. Through our Lifestyle Management services, we can also help coordinate cleaners, maintenance contractors and other service providers.

We understand that inviting someone into your home requires trust, and that trust should be supported by experience, professionalism and accountability.

Before hiring someone, take the time to ask questions. Check references. Ask about insurance, professional qualifications and background screening. Understand who will have access to your home and how that access will be managed.

These are important conversations to have before something goes wrong, not after.

Before you leave town, our home watch professionals will ask you what feels like a million questions.

We promise, we do it on purpose.

After years of caring for homes while our clients are away, we have encountered just about every situation you can imagine. That experience has taught us which questions to ask before you leave, including the little things that are very easy to overlook.

Like making sure we have the key to BOTH locks on your front door. We're sharing this recent post that we saw on Facebook as a reminder to everyone - the questions before you go are always for a reason. In the case of this Facebook post, she was able to gain access to her parents home. But, she did get a hefty locksmith bill in the process.

Our team asks about access, alarm systems, pets, water shut-offs, emergency contacts, service providers and the quirks of your home that only you might know.

Because the best time to discover that one tiny detail matters is before you are hundreds or thousands of kilometres away.

At Acuity Advantage, being prepared is part of our job. We take care of your home while you're gone, and our questions before you go are to hopefully avoid the costly locksmith bills.

Unfortunately, things don’t stop happening at home just because you’re away.

A small leak, an unexpected change or something that simply doesn’t look right can happen at any time. Regular Home Watch visits mean there’s someone local keeping an eye on your property and letting you know when something needs attention.

That’s a big part of what we’re here for.

We service Calgary and the surrounding communities, Airdrie, Red Deer County and Whitehorse.

Your pipes don’t know you’re away. They don’t check your flight itinerary, and they certainly don’t wait for a convenient time to develop a problem.

A small leak or plumbing concern can appear while a home is unoccupied, which is why scheduled Home Watch visits can be so valuable. A Professional Home Watch provider observes the property for visible concerns, documents what they see, and communicates relevant findings to the homeowner.

Home Watch can’t guarantee a plumbing problem won’t happen. It provides another set of professional eyes on the property while you’re away.

Your pipes may not keep you updated. Your Home Watch professional can.

September is almost over, which means Canadian Home Watch Month is drawing to a close.

But your home does not stop needing attention when September ends.

Over the past month, we have talked a lot about what it means to leave a home unoccupied and why having someone you trust keeping an eye on things matters.

It is not just about having someone stop by.

Does your insurance policy have requirements while you are away? Is your home prepared for changing weather? Who will be checking on it? How will you know what is happening at home while you are gone? And if something does go wrong, who is there to notice it and help you determine what happens next?

These are questions worth asking whether you are leaving for a few weeks, heading south for the winter, or simply spend a lot of time away from home.

Canadian Home Watch Month gives us an opportunity to talk about these things, but Home Watch itself matters twelve months of the year.

The best time to ask these questions is before you leave. The best time to put the right plans in place is before they are needed.

Our clients know first-hand how often we emphasize the importance of protecting their property and belongings from wildlife. No matter where you live, there is always a possibility that animals can make their way onto your property and, depending on what is left outdoors, cause damage to your belongings.

It is important to store your belongings in a way that does not attract wildlife, no matter their size. Whether you have bears and moose wandering through your yard or a family of skunks passing through, peaceful coexistence is always the goal.

We have shared some practical tips for wildlife-proofing your home on our blog, including simple steps you can take to make your property less attractive to curious visitors.

Are you the person everyone calls when something around the house needs to be fixed?

You know how homes work. You notice when something doesn’t look quite right. You’re comfortable with tools, you know your way around everyday repairs and maintenance, and you’ve learned from experience when something needs a specialist.

Acuity Advantage is looking for a Home Watch & Property Care Professional to join our team in Calgary and surrounding communities.

This is a casual, flexible position that combines professional Home Watch with hands-on Property Care. No two days necessarily look the same. You might spend one day visiting several client homes, another working through a homeowner’s maintenance list, and another responding to an issue or helping coordinate the right service provider.

It could be an especially good fit for someone retired or semi-retired who isn’t ready to sit still and would like to put years of practical knowledge and experience to good use.

If that sounds like you, or someone you know, we’d love to hear from you/them.
