“Why is a septic inspection so important when buying a home?”

When you’re house hunting, a home inspection is usually part of the process. These inspections do a great job of covering the structure, electrical, plumbing, and overall condition of the property. But when it comes to septic systems, many home inspectors simply aren’t trained to catch the important details. That can mean hidden problems—and expensive surprises—after you move in.

A dedicated septic inspection is the best way to protect yourself. A local septic company can assess the health of the system, identify any concerns, and give you a realistic idea of what to expect for future maintenance or repairs.

If you’re buying in Alberta, you can easily find qualified inspectors through the Alberta Onsite Wastewater Management Association (AOWMA). Just visit their website and click “Locate a Pro” to connect with certified professionals in your area.

❄️ How do I prepare my septic system for winter? ❄️

As summer winds down and we head into fall, it’s a good time to get your septic system ready for the colder months. A few tips to help protect your system:

✔️ Hold off on pumping (unless it’s absolutely necessary).
An empty tank takes time to refill, and in the meantime your system loses that steady flow of warm effluent that helps keep the field or mound from freezing. The best time to pump is late spring or early summer.

✔️ Let the grass grow long over your system.
Keep it trimmed through summer, but as fall approaches, stop mowing. Longer grass provides insulation and traps snow, which gives your system an extra layer of protection from frost.

✔️ Stay off your system once the ground freezes.
When temps drop below zero, traffic (vehicles, equipment, even too much foot traffic) can push frost deeper into the soil, increasing the risk of freeze-ups. Best plan: avoid driving or walking on the system until spring.

As always, if you have questions about your septic system or want tips for proper care, give us a call—we’re here to help keep things running smoothly year-round.

“Why can I smell my neighbour’s septic?”

One of the less-glamorous parts of living outside town is the occasional whiff from a neighbour’s septic system. This usually comes down to two main causes:

Open discharge system
• In some areas, open discharge systems are legal—if they meet all the setback requirements in our Standard of Practice (SOP). Even when legal, they can still produce an occasional smell depending on wind, temperature, and location.

Septic failure
• Sometimes the smell is a red flag. If a system has failed, effluent can rise to the surface. This could be a minor fix… or a bigger problem like soil oversaturation. Either way, it won’t go away on its own.

Tip: If you suspect a problem, it’s best to act sooner rather than later. The longer it’s left, the worse (and smellier) it can get.

If you’re worried about a neighbour’s septic, have them give us a call. We’ll take a look, explain what’s going on, and suggest solutions.

“Can I fill in the low spots of my septic field with topsoil?”

Short answer: Kind of — but there’s a better way.

Filling in the low spots will help shed the rain and ground water to prolong the life of your septic system.

Topsoil alone can help, but the ideal material is a 50/50 mix of sand and topsoil.
• Sand prevents the soil from compacting too much, which helps maintain crucial airflow.
• Topsoil is great for establishing grass and maintaining surface cover.

When spreading the mix, use low-impact equipment that won’t compact the soil:
✅ Track machines
✅ Lawn tractors
✅ ATVs/quads

🚫 Avoid trucks and wheeled equipment — they compress the soil and restrict airflow, which is bad news for your septic field.

Got questions? We’re just a call, email, or comment away.
Stay proactive and keep that field healthy! 🌱

“Is it safe for my kids to play around our septic tank?”

With summer in full swing and kids running around the yard, it’s important to take a moment to talk about septic tank safety.

Even though most tanks are equipped with concrete or certified plastic lids, no one—especially children—should ever play near them. These lids can fail or shift without warning, posing a serious risk of injury or even death.

Recent industry codes now require a secondary safety device inside the riser, commonly referred to as a “kid catcher.” This added layer of protection is designed to prevent accidental falls into the tank. While it’s a critical improvement, it should never be your only line of defense.

The best safeguard is education.
✅ Talk to your kids about how dangerous septic tank areas are.
✅ Show them what to look for so they can recognize these risks, even in someone else’s yard.
✅ Make it clear: never play on or around septic lids—yours or anyone else’s.

Let’s keep everyone safe this summer!

“What can I do to make my septic system last longer?”

Here are some simple, effective ways to protect your septic system and avoid costly repairs:

✅ All water treatment systems (like water softeners) should discharge into a sump, not the septic system.
✅ Spread out your laundry loads throughout the week—avoid doing too many in one day.
✅ If you use the bathtub, drain it slowly to avoid overwhelming the system.
✅ The dishwasher is better than hand-washing—it uses less water and is more septic-friendly.
✅ Avoid pouring cleaning products like bleach down the drain—they can harm the good bacteria in your tank.
✅ Only toilet paper and human waste should go into your toilet—no wipes, hygiene products, or paper towels.
✅ Fats, oils, and grease (FOG) should never go down the drain—they solidify and clog up your system.
✅ Garbage disposals put a big strain on your septic tank—avoid using them

This is a simple version of what you should be avoiding. If you have any questions or want more details, give us a call. We’re always happy to help.

“What’s the best way to install my pump in the tank?”

To code, all systems need to have a filter now before it goes out to the soil based treatment. In most cases, homeowners prefer to have a pump screen that the pump sits in. The next thing you’re need is PVC pipe coming up to the top of the manway. We recommend a union over a furnco for the top connection as it handles the pressure better and is easy to tighten/loosen in any weather. Finally, a PVC pipe back down and into the tank wall.

If you’re installing or replacing your pump and have a question, give us a call. We’re always happy to help.

“What’s the best way to cut the grass on my mound?”

✅ Use a push mower or a lawn tractor with turf tires.
🚫 Avoid heavy tractors – they compact the soil, cutting off oxygen flow that’s crucial for your mound system to work properly. Over time, this can lead to early system failure.

Fall Tip:
Stop mowing the mound around September and let the grass grow longer. Why?
Longer grass helps trap snow, which provides natural insulation during the winter and helps prevent freezing.

The longer the grass, the better your mound is protected when temps drop!

“Why do I need soil samples for my septic system?”

A lot of people have wondered why they can’t have an accurate quote for their septic before any work is done. Unfortunately, your system is unique and requires knowing what your soil is made of. Soil in the area can differ greatly across a small area.

We have to start with test pits that have samples sent to a lab to verify. This gives us the particle sizes and classification of your soil. From this, we then have the loading rate and can work out how large your system has to be and what type. Some companies can give a rough estimate based on previous experiences but none are truly accurate without the testing. When you get these numbers from contractors, ask if they think it’s the high side or low side of what the job may cost. This will help you compare companies before getting the testing done.

SEPTIC SUNDAY

“Can I dump my RV into my septic tank?”

With the long weekend here, many RVers return home wondering if it’s okay to dump their trailer tanks into their home septic system. The short answer? Yes, you can—but you really shouldn’t.

Dumping directly into your septic tank (especially through the manway) stirs up the scum and sludge, sending solids into the pump chamber. Over time, this can clog your field or mound, leading to costly repairs.

Even if you have an RV hookup installed on the 4” line from the house, you’re still sending a surge of high-strength wastewater—often 40–80 gallons all at once—into a system designed for slow, steady flow. That shock load disrupts the delicate balance inside the tank.

Septic systems don’t last forever, and replacing them isn’t cheap.
Give yours a break. A weekend away is great for your system—don’t bring all the waste back and stress it out.

Stay smart, and save your system!
