When I’m dealing with rodent activity, I’m not just looking at the droppings or the noises homeowners are hearing.

I want to know why the rodents picked that property in the first place.

Here in Southwestern Ontario, I usually start with the outside of the home, foundation areas, utility entry points, garage doors, vents, door seals, and any small gaps that could be giving them access.

Then I look at where they may be spending time once they get close to the home. Garages, basements, sheds, and storage areas are common because they’re quiet and sheltered.

Treating the activity is important, but if the entry points stay open, the problem can come back.

The best results usually come from handling both sides, what’s happening now and what allowed it to start.

Before you call anyone for rodents, take a slow walk around the outside of your home.

I always tell homeowners to check the small spots first — around utility lines, vents, garage doors, door frames, and the foundation.

Rodents don’t need a big opening to get inside. A small gap that looks harmless to us can be enough for them.

Then check your garage, basement, shed, or storage areas. If there are open bags of pet food, bird seed, or cluttered corners that don’t get moved often, those are worth cleaning up.

These small steps won’t always solve an active problem, but they can make your home a lot less inviting.

I shared more from a recent rodent prevention job here in Southwestern Ontario in this month’s journal.

I start getting more rodent calls around Southwestern Ontario in July than a lot of people would expect.

Most homeowners think of mice and rats as a fall or winter problem, but I usually start seeing the early signs in summer.

It might be a few droppings in the garage. Scratching sounds at night. A bag or box in storage that looks like something has been chewing on it.

Those little signs are easy to ignore, but they usually mean rodents have found a way close to the home.

Around here, I often find activity around garages, basements, sheds, and storage areas because they’re quiet and don’t get disturbed much.

I recently handled a rodent prevention job that started with a few small signs just like that.

I wrote up the full job and what we found in this month’s journal entry.

When mosquito activity keeps building around a property, there’s usually a combination of breeding areas and shaded resting spots causing the problem.

At Petty Pest Control in Southwestern Ontario, I don’t just focus on reducing the mosquitoes you notice flying around. I focus on what’s allowing them to stay active around the property in the first place.

I start with a full inspection of the yard, looking for standing water, drainage issues, shaded landscaping, clogged gutters, and other areas where mosquitoes tend to gather.

From there, I apply targeted treatment around high-activity areas like shrubs, fence lines, damp corners, and outdoor living spaces. I also go over the conditions around the property that should be corrected to help prevent the issue from building back up.

Mosquito control works best when both treatment and prevention are handled together.

Before calling anyone, I usually recommend Southwestern Ontario homeowners check a few simple things around the yard when mosquito activity starts increasing.

The first thing I tell people to look for is standing water. That includes buckets, bird baths, clogged gutters, planters, toys, and anything else holding rainwater for more than a couple of days.

It also helps to keep grass and shrubs trimmed back, especially around decks and fence lines where mosquitoes like to rest during the day.

If you spend time outside in the evenings, adding airflow with outdoor fans can help as well since mosquitoes aren’t strong flyers.

These steps won’t completely eliminate mosquitoes, but they can reduce how comfortable your property is for them.

I explained more about what I found during a recent mosquito prevention job here in Southwestern Ontario in this month’s journal.

June is when I start getting more calls about mosquitoes here in Southwestern Ontario.

Once the weather warms up and people start spending more time outside, mosquito activity picks up pretty quickly. Most homeowners notice it first in the evenings around decks, patios, and backyards.

Mosquitoes don’t just make it uncomfortable to be outside. Once they start breeding around a property, the activity can build fast, especially after periods of rain and heat.

In Southwestern Ontario, I usually find mosquito activity tied to standing water, clogged gutters, shaded areas, and spots around the yard that stay damp for long periods.

I went through a recent mosquito prevention job in Southwestern Ontario in this month’s journal, including what was attracting them and how we handled it.

Ant problems can be frustrating, especially when they keep coming back after cleaning.

Most of the work we do in Southwestern Ontario is focused on solving the problem properly so it doesn’t keep repeating.

When ant activity keeps coming back, it usually means there’s a colony nearby and a clear entry point being used.

At Petty Pest Control in Southwestern Ontario, I don’t just focus on the ants you see. I focus on where they’re coming from and why they’re staying.

I start with a full inspection to trace the trail and identify entry points around windows, doors, and the foundation.

From there, I apply targeted treatment along the active areas and at the source, not just random spots. I also address the exterior where the colony is likely located.

Sealing small gaps is part of the process as well, so new ants can’t follow the same path back inside.

Ant control works best when both the activity and the cause are handled at the same time.

Before calling anyone, I usually recommend Southwestern Ontario homeowners try a few simple things when ants start showing up.

Start with the basics. Wipe down counters using a cleaner that removes scent trails, not just crumbs. Store sugar, flour, and other dry foods in sealed containers so ants don’t have easy access.

It also helps to keep sink areas dry, especially overnight, and check around window trims and door edges for small gaps where they could be getting in. If you have pets, try not to leave food out for long periods.

These steps can help reduce what’s attracting ants and make it harder for them to settle in. They won’t always solve the problem completely, but they can slow it down and sometimes stop it early.

I went into more detail about what I found during a recent ant job here in Southwestern Ontario in this month’s journal.
