But wait, it gets better (or worse, depending on your feelings about spiders)...
Because all those midges? They’re basically a 5-star meal for the local spider population, which is now booming like it’s Spider Coachella out there.

The creature in the center is not an ant
It’s a spider

This is Myrmarachne
A genus of ant-mimicking jumping spiders

It evolved to live among ants without being noticed
By copying their body shape
By waving its front legs like antennae
By moving with ant-like rhythm

It does this to hunt
It does this to hide
And in some species
It does this to mate with real ants

Ants don’t recognize it as a threat
But to other predators
It looks like something they avoid

It doesn’t build webs
It doesn’t wait for prey
It infiltrates

This is not mimicry for camouflage
It’s mimicry for access
For deception
For survival
