A Historic Milestone for Highland Waste Management!
Today, Greener Way is humbled to announce the successful signing of two landmark MoUs with Laya Gewog (Gasa Dzongkhag) and Barshong Chiwog (Naro Gewog, Thimphu); paving a new path for circular waste solutions in Bhutan’s mountain communities.
This achievement marks a major turning point:
♻️ From unmanaged stockpiles to structured movement of waste;
♻️ From burning & dumping to segregation, storage, and recycling;
♻️ From isolated challenges to shared responsibility & partnership.
None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our development partner ICIMOD, whose vision and funding are helping bring circular waste systems to places once considered unreachable.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to:
▪️The leaders & people of Laya and Barshong, for their ownership and commitment;
▪️Gasa Dzongkhag Administration and Jigme Dorji National Park for guidance, logistics, and trust;
▪️Local government officials, community members, and institutions who are ready to champion change.
Today’s MoUs formalize:
✔️ In Laya, waste will now be brought down to Taksemakha by the households themselves—promoting ownership, responsibility, and true behavioural change.
✔️ Waste storage + transport networks to Khatoed & Thimphu.
✔️ Infrastructure support & recycling pathways.
✔️ A long-term partnership to protect our mountains & our future.
📍A new chapter begins for zero open burning, zero stockpiling, and zero-waste Highlands.
Bhutan’s remote communities are proving: distance is not a barrier when vision and collaboration come together.
Together, we are moving mountains.
