🌸 Sports Carnival for Menstrual Health Awareness 🌸

Safepad Bangladesh was proud to sponsor the awards for the female category winners at the recent Sports Carnival, organized by Youth’s Voice – an event focused on breaking the stigma around menstruation.

Mofassal Aziz, Creative Director at Youth’s Voice, said: “Sports bring people together. With this event, we are working to rally communities around menstrual health awareness and make it clear that it is not a taboo, but a public priority.”

Rakibul Hasan, Vice-Chairman of Youth’s Voice, added: “This event builds on over a decade of community work focused on awareness and empowerment. It represents an important step in normalising conversations around menstrual health.”

Prominent figures attended the closing ceremony to present medals and trophies, and Safepad Bangladesh was proud to support female participants while highlighting the importance of access to safe, reusable menstrual products and open conversations about periods.

We are committed to helping communities in Bangladesh normalize menstruation, promote menstrual hygiene, and empower women 💖

Ramadan and Periods

In many Bangladeshi homes, girls feel embarrassed when they get their period in Ramadan. Some even pretend to fast to avoid questions. But Islam never made menstruation shameful. It is natural and created by Allah. Not fasting during this time is obedience, not weakness.

Worship does not stop, it simply changes. You can make dhikr, dua, listen to Quran, give charity, and work on your character. The problem is not religion, it is taboo. At Safepad Bangladesh, we stand for dignity, awareness, and breaking the silence. Ramadan is for every believer in every state.

When a community normalises pain, it becomes invisible

In Khurushkul, a river island community surrounded by the Bay of Bengal, women repeatedly shared the same experience:

“We thought irritation, itching, or burning sensation after every cycle was just part of being a woman.”

But global data paints a harsher reality.
The WHO confirms that poor menstrual hygiene increases the risk of reproductive tract infections by up to 60% yet most women never connect the symptoms to the cause.

And the problem doesn’t end at homes.
Cox’s Bazar sits next to one of the world’s most plastic polluted coastlines. According to UNEP, an estimated 45 billion menstrual pads are thrown away worldwide every year, many ending up in our oceans.
A single disposable pad can take up to 500 years to break down, meaning one woman’s waste today becomes a burden for ten generations.

Here in Khurushkul, women told us they often throw used pads into canals or the river because
• there are no safe disposal options
• burning releases toxic smoke
• burying is difficult in sandy soil
• open bins attract dogs and animals

The result
Waste travels directly to the sea and the community pays the price through pollution, blocked waterways and declining fish health.

Menstrual health is not just a personal issue here.
It is a community health issue.
An environmental issue.
A human dignity issue.

And change begins by breaking silence, one neighbourhood at a time.

What Women Endure Should Not Be Considered Normal
📍 Pekua, Cox’s Bazar

In many rural communities, a common belief persists: “As long as bleeding is regular, everything is fine.” However, national surveys indicate a different reality: nearly 65% of rural women have never been educated on what a healthy menstrual cycle looks like, and over 40% often misinterpret infection symptoms as general weakness or stress. Limited access to water, privacy, and safe drying spaces further complicates menstrual hygiene management.

Supported by IDE Bangladesh and implemented by Youth Worldwide Foundation, our team used doctor-guided digital materials to address these misconceptions. Participants learned:
• The risks associated with infrequent pad or cloth changes
• How damp cloth can trigger recurring irritation
• Key warning signs that should never be ignored

The session also provided practical guidance on managing periods safely in low-privacy households and mitigating infection risks when drying space is limited.

By receiving Safepad’s antimicrobial products, the participants understood that effective menstrual health management requires both knowledge and appropriate tools. They left the session empowered, confident, and equipped to care for themselves with dignity.

Breaking the Cycle, Not the Cloth

Location: Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar

Most women here believed
“If it is washed, it is safe.”

But research across rural Bangladesh shows that over 80 percent of women reuse cloth that never fully dries and more than 55 percent experience recurring infections without understanding the cause. Many silently tolerate discomfort, itching, or odour as a normal part of life.

Our team, with support from IDE Bangladesh and implemented by Youth Worldwide Foundation , used doctor guided digital materials to explain how moisture creates a breeding ground for bacteria, why repeated infections can harm long term reproductive health, and how simple changes can protect wellbeing.

The dignity kit winners explored Safepad carefully, realising for the first time that comfort and safety are choices, not luck.Through this session, women gained clarity, confidence, and practical solutions, breaking years of unhealthy cycles.

Knowledge Creates Strength. Awareness Creates Safety.

Bhola | Kunjerhat Secondary School

In Bhola, many girls shared a challenge that often goes unnoticed. They know a little about periods, but almost nothing about the hidden risks that come with poor hygiene, lack of clean water or unsafe practices encouraged by misinformation.

At Kunjerhat Secondary School, we listened to students who wanted clear answers. They asked why some girls feel constant discomfort, why infections happen, why certain practices are unsafe and how they can protect themselves when resources at home are limited.

Safepad, working within the platform set by IDE Bangladesh & implemented by Give Bangladesh helped turn these questions into learning moments.
We discussed how to maintain menstrual hygiene with the resources available, how to identify early signs of infection, how to stay safe during the cycle and how reusable options can reduce both cost and worry.
Most importantly, we spoke about creating daily habits that protect their health regardless of their surroundings.

The girls left with practical skills they can use immediately, along with the confidence to look after their bodies in a cleaner, safer and more informed way.

Because real change begins when girls understand not only what to do, but why it matters and how it protects their future.

Healthy Minds. Healthy Bodies. Brighter Futures.

In many coastal communities, girls grow up dealing with more than just academic pressure. They face early responsibilities at home, changing bodies, rising stress and very little space to understand what they are experiencing.

At Badarpur High School in Patuakhali Sadar, students shared openly that they often feel overwhelmed during adolescence. Some spoke about sudden mood changes, some about fear of unexpected body changes, and others about the pressure to appear strong even when they are confused inside.

Safepad created a space, designed within the platform set by IDE Bangladesh, where they could breathe, listen and speak freely.
We talked about how the mind and body are connected, how stress affects health, how self care supports both physical strength and confidence, and how girls can manage their period in ways that protect their wellbeing.

For many, this was the first time someone explained that emotional ups and downs are normal and that caring for their body is not something to be embarrassed about.
The girls left with grounding techniques, better awareness and the comfort of knowing that they are not alone in what they feel.

Because adolescent health is not just about information. It is about reassurance, understanding and helping girls build the inner strength they need for the lives they dream of.
