Bit of rain over the weekend, a little more this morning… and suddenly the pool starts acting like it’s been through a full-blown cyclone. 🌧️😂

It might look harmless, but foamy spa water can be caused by things like body oils, lotions, sunscreen, hair products, detergent from swimmers, low calcium hardness or water that simply needs a proper balance.

Why does your pool pH keep bouncing around like a yo-yo, no matter how much acid you add? 🎢

The answer usually sits with your **total alkalinity** — the unsung hero of pool chemistry that most pool owners don’t even know exists.

Think of alkalinity as your pool’s shock absorber for pH swings. When it’s right, your pH behaves. When it’s too low, your pH goes up and down like it’s had three coffees. When it’s too high, your pH gets stubborn and won’t move no matter how much acid you throw at it.

And with this changing Brisbane weather — a bit of rain, cooler temps, wind, and more rain hanging around — now is exactly when your pool needs the best chance to stay balanced. 💦

💧 Keep total alkalinity between 80–120ppm — this gives your pH the buffer zone it needs to stay stable
📊 Test alkalinity monthly — it changes slower than pH, but it has a massive impact on everything else
⚖️ Use pool buffer to raise alkalinity, or hydrochloric acid to lower pH — but go slow, small doses work best

Nine times out of ten, we test their water and find their alkalinity is sitting way out of whack. Once we help get it back into that sweet spot, suddenly the pH becomes predictable again. It’s one of those “ohhhhhh, that makes sense now” pool moments. 😂

Think again.
Autumn is actually one of the trickiest times of the year for Brisbane pool owners. The weather cools down, the rain comes and goes, leaves start dropping, and a lot of people ease up on their chemical routine.
That’s exactly when algae likes to make its grand entrance 😅
The mix of falling leaves, changing temperatures, rain, and lower pool use can create the perfect storm for cloudy water, green water, and annoying pool problems you definitely don’t want later.
🌿 Keep your chlorine routine going — algae can still grow when chlorine drops too low
💧 Shock dose through autumn — falling leaves and organic matter need extra help breaking down
🧹 Brush and vacuum more often — dead leaves and debris can settle, stain, and feed algae
